Official Euro 2008 thread.

I got owned by a video? Right.

People adore Maradona because of his individual action skills. The same reason why people like Ronaldinho and all the other circus players.

It looks nice. Although I'll immediately admit Maradona was easily the best individualist out there, I simply don't rate individualists that highly. The crowd does, however.

And YouTube video's don't mean dick. What I mean with "watching a player play" is to watch him actively, over many seasons, on a consistent basis. And I highly doubt any of us on this board are old enough to have seen old legends play on a regular basis.

I'll put Diego in the top 5, but not top 3. :)

And there is no best player ever. Not Maradona, not Cruijff, not Pele. They're incomparable.
Fair point, although i totally disagree that he was a circus player because his achievements with Argentina, Boca Juniors and Napoli dont back that up. A player that doesnt play for the team doesnt win. Same applies for Ronaldinho. When i said the video owns you i meant that it proves my point that Maradona was one of the best passers of the ball. As i said before, i watched Maradona alot when i was a kid and i have seen a lot of earlier games. I think himself and Pele were the best. Maradona appeals to me more. But to each his own of course.

I meant to post that before hizzle. interesting.

The circus artist was meant as a semi-joke. No sane person can dispute that they were/are great players.

I just talked to Hizzy about this, and the fact is that there isnt really a best player in the world. They all had different qualities and played in different eras. I guess it's a matter of what kind of player you like more.

And people like Ronaldinho and Maradona (Diego > Dinho however, by a mile or six) are so incredibly popular because of the crazy skills with one ball. But then I get all skeptical and criticize that because I dislike how a lot of people are only focused on what the dude does with a ball. You know, there's a git posting a Ronaldinho video with some great goals, but what you don't see is Dinho playing a fucking horrible match and wasting the ball 8 out of 10 times when Barca loses to a lower team or something.

The point is, I may be a bit overly critical of people like Dinho and Maradona because of their popularity with footy-ignoramuses. :)

So Torres scores the winning goal for Spain in the Euro 2008 final at the Ernst Happel stadium. 1 million euros for the guy who can tell me the name of the player who scored the winning goal in the last major European final played at this stadium?

The word Player is singular. Thus when people ask who the best player was they are talking about the best single person; the best individual.

I understand what you are saying though, but I think you underestimate what Diego did for and with his teams a little. He had great passing ability, and hogged the ball when needed to win.

I rank Diego and Jordan the same, you'd always see Jordan hog the ball in clutch situations, you just knew when the team was down Jordan was going to pull something out. The same with Maradona.

But you are right, to each his own.

Btw isn't it worrying that in the past 2 tournaments there hasn't been a standout striker or a real striking presence. Villa won the golden boot after 2 games. 2 fucking games lol.

Where the hell were the strikers?

Well, Villa > Torres. and has been for quiet some time. But youre a Liverpool fan so...:p

Oh and actually some of the time I felt it was right that Torres went off, coz he had ran himself into the ground and didn't have much left. Apart from the first match when Torres went off after 50 mins.. I think Aragones got it right more often than not.

2 goals and playing well, meh...I need some goals dammit. Pavlychenko played well, only scored 3 goals. (or 2?)

RVN played well scored 2. Villa won the golden boot after 180 minutes. Fantastic...

I need like 6 goals players, Klose won the golden boot in the WC with 5 goals, then there was about 10 players on 3! No-one got 4? wtf.

Villa is very good but i think Torres is better(obviously). Liverpool came so close to signing Villa a few years back. Cant remember why the deal fell through. I think Villa got injured or something.

Congrats to Spain. Torres is a beast. He just abused Lahm in that play, that goal will go down as one of the best European goals.

Fuck Germany, I keep saying to you bereal, you guys suck and won't be winning anything anytime soon.

Feel bad for hrvats, that was a fucked up from referee from that Turkey match that he let the game go on and Turkish player scored last minute.

Duke you penies, whos dick are you sucking now? What happened to you guys against Russia? Chokers.
