you mean like the old system? when there was only 8 teams in it. 2 groups of 4 with the winner of each group playing the final. That was much too short and there was a lot of one sided game in the group. then if you had 32 teams of only league champions from their respective countries, then you will end up with a horribly lob sided and boring tournament. Can you imagine if Real Madid or Man Utd played the champions of Liechtenstein? they would beat them about 20-0.
i think the top 2 or 3 teams from the top leagues should go through. Getting into the champions league every year from 4th place only covers up Liverpool's lack of progress in the league.
Not totally like the old system, But its like when a team finishes 4th and get to the Champions league over an actual champion. (this isnt a dig at Liverpool btw
)
I pretty much agree with your last paragraph,its kinda what I meant.
And if a team finishes 4th, maybe they should have a playoff with another team who finished 4th. So Liverpool v Fiorentia or Atletco. This will also improve the UEFA Cup which used to be more entertaining than the Champions League.
Obviously really weak leagues should still have to qualify, but maybe they should get easier ties, over time they will get more money and more time to improve so we get more of a balance. England/Spain/Italy. That is the Champions League right now.
