ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press Tuesday.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said test results may not be back for weeks or even months.
Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in DeKalb County.
Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.
Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.
Authorities also declined to say whether drugs or steroids were found inside the house. "We're not releasing any information as far as what was located inside the house," sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said Tuesday.
Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.
Whiteside said toxicology tests could take up to a week or longer to complete.
Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.
"They were nice," said Lorre Jones, who lives across the street. Her daughter Alaina said: "We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm."
Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate Tuesday.
"I saw him with his family all the time," said Baswell. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people."
World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."
The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said it had been asked by authorities not to release further information on the deaths.
Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."
"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.
Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.
The WWE canceled its live Monday Night RAW card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.
Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.
Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.
Benoit became a standout at an early age among wrestling prospects who trained in the dungeon basement of the house where fellow Canadians and professional wrestlers Owen and Bret Hart trained. Owen Hart was killed during a wrestling event in 1999.
"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

TMZ has learned more about the deaths of WWE wrestling superstar Chris Benoit, his wife and son -- and the information is extremely disturbing.

Several Atlanta-based law enforcement sources have told TMZ Benoit may have strangled his wife on Saturday, then smothered his son in his bed a day later. Investigators refuse to officially comment, pending final confirmation by the coroner on the cause and time of the deaths.

One source told TMZ that Benoit was texting friends during Sunday's WWE "Vengeance" Pay-Per-View program -- possibly watching the show with his son, who may have been alive at the time.

According to sources, Benoit then hanged himself Monday in a weight room inside the family home.

A police investigation is ongoing

 What so the son and Chris watched Vengence while the mother was dead?

if all this shit about murder-suicide comes out to be 100% factual information, then that just fucks up everything he ever accomplished and just gets over ran by the fact that he killed himself AND his own family...R.I.P nonetheless though, he must've been going through something real fucked up where he had to kill his family and them himself to make everything right...

there is about to be a press update outside his home. this is crazy. i mean these details you hear dont sound nothing like the man you heard about on raw last night. and watching the event sunday night with his son while his wife was dead? wtf?!?!?

suposedly tmz was saying his wife tried to file for divorce and put a restraining order against him fearing for his life but then later pulled out

i think you are right Devious the media is going to point the finger at wrestling and vince. i remember that real sports interview a few years back asking vince about why so many deaths are involved in wrestling and lots of them involving drugs etc.

I'm sure the media will put more a blame on Steroids if it turns out that this attack was induced by Roids. Wrestling always seems to get away with shit, and this will be another chalked up to an unfortunate event.

i just saw a live conference on t.v. regarding this case, and it seems to be official that benoit DID kill his wife, son, and himself...the wife and son were both asphyxiated, no saying how so to be exact...and then hung himself...no illegal drugs were found...and it is being ruled out as a double homicide-suicide...benoit has officially wrecked his name.

they said that roids were found but they were prescription and other drugs were there too but all legal

he bound his wife, tied her up, and killed her. placed bibles next to both of the bodies. killed her friday, his son on saturday and sometime sunday killed himself.

the conference just ended and they are already talking about drugs and roids being involved in many of the deaths of wrestlers over the past 10 years. they said the number is upwards of 60 wrestlers under the age of 45. is that true?

Fox News made him seem like a roided up Hulk. I still don't believe it was soley roid rage.

WWE/Vince will have alot of heat on them about this.

It might have been a steroid-induced thyroid problem that caused him to lash out and kill Nancy. Then he supposedly killed his son so he'd be with her.

I don't know if I'll be able to watch another Chris Benoit match again, and that is a damn shame.

STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.

WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

FUCC tha coward for taking the life of his son, his son was young n' didn't deserve to die, may chris benoit rest in piss

R.I.P.

Its real fucked up that he did this shit, i really wonder why tho? i've been followin the man wrestle for nearly 15 years, hell as long as i can remember, this definately seems completely out of character....

but he does have a history of domestic abuse allegations within his marriage, but the part i dont get is what could possess a man to kill his 7 year old son....just wow...

he definately did tarnish his legacy, i was hoping (maybe thats a bad choice of words) that someone else did this and it wasnt suicide related....but damn this is really fucked up...

heres a briefing of what happened at the press conference earlier today....

-The lead investigator began the press conference. He says that yesterday they came to the home after receiving a call for a welfare check on his home. He missed some out of state work and they became concerned and asked for the check. Police found the bodies of Chris Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. They were all deceased. Autopsy's were performed and it has been ruled a double homicide/suicide.

-They feel Friday he murdered his wife via asphyxiation and later the weekend the same for Daniel. Sunday morning is when they feel he hung himself in the basement area. They are waiting on toxicology reports, which could take up to 2 weeks.

-There were no notes left that they have found. The son was in his bed. Chris Benoit has been arrested for DUI in the county, but not for domestic abuse. They have not confirmed the allegations of abuse or the reported divorce attempt.

-They found legal prescriptions in the residence. There were steroids.

-There is no motive as of now with the evidence that they have.

-They say he sent text messages, but they will not comment on the contents of such.

-They will not speculate if steroids had anything to do with the death or his state of mind.

-It appears he hung himself within 24 hours of killing his son.

-They reiterate the time of 2-weeks on toxicology results.

The DA joins the conference. He has no statement prepared, but he takes questions.

-The bizarre circumstances are that in a community like this, this is what is odd. A 7-year old is dead, and we may never understand why. The timing is what he feels is bizarre. But they have not verified all of the times.

-There was a bible beside each of the victims (Nancy and Daniel).

-Nancy was bound by her hands and feet, as well as some blood under her head. She was wrapped in a towel.

-No signs of struggle with the son.

-He says that in 2003 there was an order of protection brought against Benoit, but he has not seen all of the paper work.

-He is baffled as to why someone would kill a 7-year old.

-The families have been contacted.

-He has had no communication with the WWE.

-They reiterate that Nancy died Friday, Daniel early Saturday and Chris sometime late Saturday/early Sunday.

-Benoit hung himself with the cord from his weight machines.

-They need to get all of the toxicology results in to see if things match up. 2-weeks, maybe longer.

-If anything else comes up, they will come out and re-brief the media

this is still just so unbelievably fucked up. i can't believe that Chris would do a thing like this to his wife and son. i suppose the only good to come out of it all is that the motherfucker took his own life. a man who would do this to his own family doesn't deserve to live. i don't think i'll ever be able to watch a Benoit match again without being disgusted.

that is a weird message to send

is anybody buying the roid rage thing that the media is trying to pin this on? i doubt mainly because we dont know he was actually on roids at the time plus wwe's counter for the roid rage speculation actually makes sense. the murder was thought out and deliberate. plus the placing of the bibles doesnt indicate someone going on a rampage

no, i can't believe that this was roid rage. the fucker made a weekend out of killing his family, and roid rage is characterized by short bursts of extreme rage. this looks like flat out premeditated murder, especially in Daniel's case.
