Technology PC Gamers: C'mere....

ok, im thinking about getting a laptop, most probably will get one, for college this fall.... i got a job that'll net me around 1500 between now and the end of august, which is enough to get a fully loaded laptop from gateway, HP, etc., or maybe a very good one from ibuypower or cyberpower....

my question?? well, another pre-reading.... when i go off, i know im gonna be watching tons of movies and music that i dl, but also with the past year or so, i kinda got back into gaming in general.. i kinda quit after the 8th grade in fear of looking nerdy, but whatever... im back in it now...

so while i probably wont be playing games that require powerhouses to play properly, like doom 3 ( or it was one back when it was rleased) and all those other games... i just wanna play new releases such as command and conquer tiberium wars, which really just requires an above average vid card....

right now my piece is a bout 4 years old and has a 32 mb vid card, expandable to 64 if needed..... not even by today's standards....

so i'll leave this desktop at home since it still works and whatnot, but for this laptop, my question is, is it worth spending the dough for a gaming laptop from cyberpower or ibuypower, or should i just stick to a basic one from HP and whatnot??? obviously gaming on a laptop is a little different from that on a desktop, but is it something that's detrimental to the gaming experience?? i mean, im gonna get about 2 gigs of ram, a core 2 duo 1.8 or maybe 2.0, and a 15.4 screen... will it really be that bad? and for RTS games, i'll use a mouse so games wont be too hard...

question: is the experience on a laptop all taht different than that on a dsktop?

Can't help you I only game on desk tops if i can't have the most current graphics card and the fastest system i can't use the computer.

From what i have heard the only real issue with labtops is how hot they tend to get.

well,im sure the hardware is fine, it's more about the mouse vs. pad, which is easy to fix, but still being on a smaller machine... does that change anyhting?

My main advice to you would be to not refer to your computer as your "piece".

To be honest, if you're going to use it primarily for gaming then you'd be better off with a desktop. Obviously if you were planning on taking it into college to take notes, then a desktop is out of question, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend a laptop. They do get hot (I'm frying an egg on mine right now) and generally they're just less suitable for gaming.

If you do get a laptop, get a mouse. A USB mouse, or a wireless one. Touchpads can be frustrating.

well it was short for "piece of shit"... if it means anything else in wigger terms, let me know... not that you're a wigger, but in case you're assuming im a wigger and....

but no, it's not for taking notes... it's gonna be for music, internet, movies, and gaming...

ibuypower and cyberpower are both sites that make gaming pcs, meaning the graphics cards are gaming quality.... it also applies to laptop as well... i just want to be able to take the thing around... i dont know of many people that own desktops in college, more specifically, they bought a new one for college... i've always wanted a laptop too, so that's kinda influencing my decision... sometimes i wanna watch movies or listen to music, or hell, even game in bed.... that's something you cant do with a desktop... so that's why im goin for a laptop...

but im not getting it to take notes.. our school has given all the teachers a tablet... i dont really like them.. some students bring their own since they feel they're more organized that way... but i'd prolly just lose it... so im just gonna have a laptop for the room and that's it...

someone, if you have any freetime, check out cyber and ibuypower.com.... they both look the same as far as the main site goes, but they're a bit diff. from each other, but both are for gaming computers...

and i do have extra MS intellimice at home... i could get those with me...

sorry but laptop with the best core 2 duo, 7900go, 2gb of ram won't stand against average pc for about 700$. Everything in laptops are made to consume less power, be smaller and don't emit too much warm. So processor like best core 2 duo mobile in laptop doesn't even make it against Sempron 3000+ in desktop pc, 7900go<6600GT, 2gb ram in laptop is usually so slow that there's no use of it in games. Laptop for gaming is a bad idea. Better buy a weaker 300$ laptop off ebay for internet, school etc, save the rest and buy a desktop for gaming. When you buy a desktop you can put anything you want in it, depending on how much cash you've got. For 1000$ you can get a really good pc that'll handle all new games. 1500$ laptop won't handle most of forecoming games even on medium details.

4 years is impossible. You never know how long will it handle. 10 monts ago I built my pc (just computer, without display or anything). I paid more than 2000$ and it already has problems with newest games on high detail in 1280*1024 res.
Even pc built with 8gb ram in 2xdual channel, 2 8800ultras in SLI and best AMD Phenom probably won't handle best games on highest detail in 2008 or 2009. That's how pc world advances.

^^^ that's wonderful, but look at the specs above your post.... i think it's pretty decent...

also, i dunno how many times i have to say this... i am not going to be playing HIGH END games on it... nothing that requires the top-of-the-line vid cards... just the average ones that are coming out today... i know the laptop cant replace the performance of a high-end desktop when it comes to playing games, but as long as the comp can run it smoothly, that's all that matters... im not going to be playing the battlefield (which im sure this laptop can handle well)... right now im playing diablo on my desktop and it runs fine... i'll continue on it in college.... maybe a command and conquer tiberium wars...whatever...

do this, take away the vid card aspect of the specs... 2 gigs, 2.0 ghz good enough to handle multitasking? internet, aim, browsing, music and torrents all running at the same time... i should hope so

ya however the computer world its not advancing as fast as it once was, the highest demanding game runs perfectly on my system on the highest settings while i have numerous programs running.

I only game on my laptop.

Fuck touchpads, use a mouse.

Other than that, i Like it more on the desktop, because you can game where ever you want.

The keyboard is a tad smaller, at first it's really really annoying, but if you don't have fat fingers, you'll get used to it after a week.

I have an r60 IBM laptop... its about 1700$US worth.

1024MB Ram, 2ghz a pretty good vid card and the rest is class.

I'm thinking about buying a 1gb Ram card so I can have 1512MB Ram, but that will happen in August when i get my 1600$ check hihi.

aight i got my laptop... not so much gaming-oriented after all...

its an hp pavilion dv6500t

t7300 2.0 GHZ core 2 duo
2 gigs of ram
nvidia geforce 8200m GS 383MB
80 gig hdd.... which fuckin blows...

i kinda got a question.... my hdd had only 33.4 GB of 66.4 GB free for use RIGHT OUTTA THE BOX..... the Windows folder is like... 4 gigs... diunno if that's right... then there's a buncha bullshit HP tagged on to it.. like health care assistant which does nothing... still... how is more than half my hdd space gone??? i have 38 gigs of music and it wont fit on this shit...
