We did talk about software. Your pretty design is for people of the simpleton variety whereas android can be used for pretty much anyone, that's how i see it at least

1. It's a good analogy. People with different needs choose different products.

2. If being a geek means constantly being frustrated all the time because a new phone has come out that is better than, being frustrated because my OS is "so complex" and "not meant for simpletons," then I'm happy being a simpleton.

But as someone that knows my way around iOS and Android, in terms of usability and not developing apps and shit, they each have their own times and places. Which is why I own both.

What type of user do you see yourself as? Are you a self-proclaimed "geek?" Knowing how to install a third-party app using Astro File Manager does not make you a "geek." I would say that title belongs to people that develop ROMs or anything in general. Anyone can learn iOS or Android if they spent enough time and gave enough of a shit about it.

That's in short what I dislike the most about Iphones - iOS limitations, terrible value for money, a huge group of silly owners and Apple targeting their phones their way, creating the base for Appleish-ignorance. Only that. No big deal about hardware, it's only average but comes in a pretty well balanced package in form of a little, handy smartphone and that's more than about 90% of people probalby need anyway.
If you take business/marketing classes, you learn that prices can be and are set on a multitude of factors. Your posts on this board indicate that you have a very limited grasp of the concept of pricing. To you, price depends almost solely on the quality of the product and the quality of its components (manufacturing costs). In other words, you generally think of cost-plus pricing. In reality, Apple doesn't function based on that because the iPhone is the measuring stick when it comes to pricing and smartphones. About 8 months ago, both the Nexus S and the iPhone 4 went for $199 with a new two year contract. If based on value and costs, the Samsung should have warranted a higher price, but because Samsung would have been outcompeted with a lower $199 iPhone price, it had to stick to that one.

Now, I understand that your #1 displeasure isn't that the iPhone is priced so high, it's that consumers are willing to pay that much for it. Welcome to consumer demand 101. Now why is it that they are willing to pay that much for it? Because not everyone is in that geek mindset that I talked about.

Your analogy sucks because you went off saying apple doesn't always have the best hardware and android does. When a new m3 comes out it always has the newest and best technology, this last one had pistons lined with fucking silicon for example. And they're crazy fucking powerful constantly having at least 100hp per litre. So really android is more like the m3 and an iPhone is more like, I don't know, a Cadillac cts. It's fast has decent tech, minus the magnetized suspension cus that's just sick, easy to use but if it came down to it couldn't keep up with the m3's and amg's etc

All smartphones are free here, just depends how much you want to pay a month on your contract. You can choose to pay any amount you want up front and as a result pay less each month. Someone once said people get Android because it's less expensive. That is a stupid thing to say. As if the existence of low and mid-range devices negates the existence of premium ones. Apple has made people stupid that way with their one device model.

If you treat people like they are stupid, they will become stupid. That goes for the so called "simplicity" of iOS also. You can use any Android device in an equally "basic" way as well, but if you're up for learning more, you can. But if people get "used" to that simplicity, they dumb down to it. That's why you'll hear iOS fans call Android unnecessarily complex or whatever. It isn't, they're just used to using a device that has the complexity of a Fisher Price toy.

so then, half of masta's argument goes out the window. ok, maybe a third.

^ Which one?

Yeah I took marketing classes and I know how supply and demand works, Sofi.
If it comes to people sure, I guess that a part of what annoys me is that people are willing to pay that much for an Iphone and they do, obviously it's what keeps the price high. And I only mean a specific group of consumers amongst Apple clients.

Not only about manufacturing costs since they're much lower than what the final product prices anyway. I do look at value for money when buying any piece of technology though. I think that's what any smart consumer should do and if your money aren't worth taking time to gather information then at least do so for the sake of Smartphone market.
A lot of people buy Iphones because they are fooled into doing that, that's why they are willing to pay more than it's worth. Because they don't know their options. It annoys me not only if it comes to Iphones but most products. Most people don't think for longer than a second about what or why they are buying. I also assume that's one of many reasons why Iphones are that popular in America, because that's where people care the least about what they're buying.

The analogy was comparing brute power vs. true engineering. You proved my point by mentioning technologies BMW uses to make up for not having very large engines. Anyone can slap a V8 and make it go fast. It takes some brains to take a 3.0L six-cylinder, and make it go just as fast and handle even better.

Everyone here mentioned how Android phones have superior hardware. That the GS2's dualcore was the end all for processors. Ok. Sure. But in everyday use, how much faster is it than a dual core processor in an iPhone 5? On paper, it should rape it, but when using the browser or playing a game? How much different is it?

Android is more feature-rich, I'll admit. But that doesn't come without users having to dig through menus to optimize their settings. This is my opinion. And you still haven't said what kind of user you think you are and why. Because that might be important in me seeing what you're saying Android is and does for you. Because I can see you as an advanced user, being rooted and all. But certainly not a geek. I won't speak for everyone, but I don't think anyone here knows how to develop, or at least does it on a big scale where the community is all over it. That would be geek to me. Looking at specifications reported on blogs about phones and joining in on a mobile OS pissing contest is not "geek" at all.

What m3 are you talking about? Lol one that is over a decade old. New m3 is brute power and tech, so yeah, wherever that analogy takes us.

I don't even know where this geek talk started but chyea. I don't even know where to start. I've done shit to my phone following directions and I've also done shit to my phone tinkering around with adb. I've tucked around with some apks and roms but nothing too serious. I wouldn't say I'm a geek by your definition but I can do a tiny bit of stuff.

@Coonie - There are things about Android that I dislike too. One of them is that it's not minimalistic at all. That's why it does shitloads of things at the same time, multitasks dozens of processes and eats up cpu power and battery quite a lot but it REALLY is efficient for what it does, and it's definitely MUCH more complex.

It doesn't take much to make a 1ghz processor run UI alone and at times one app or a few core processes, which is what iOs does. An older Iphone 3g can't handle iOS4 well so I'm not really sure which one is better optimized, since even first gen Androids can handle new Android versions.

terrible value for money. you don't pay for the phone in the UK, apparently.

See, NO. They are not fooled. They consider their options and buy ANYWAY. I know a couple computer science and engineering people who have chosen iOS over Android. They weren't fooled. They know their options. But they PREFER iOS. And you just can't get that through your thick head lol.

I will agree that people aren't rational consumers. There's a whole field of science dedicated to it (behavioral economics). Pick up Dan Arieli's Predictably Irrational.

You wanna see multitasking done right, use a webOS device. That's how multitasking should be done.

The new M3 brings power and engineering into harmony. Which is why it constantly beats its competitors, the AMG C63, the RS4, and the IS-F. It also does it with 400HP and 295 ft/lb of torque. Again. Less than its competitors. But it still gets higher reviews and sets the standard for what a sports car should be.

I beg to differ. I think both parties have "self-respecting geeks" that know plenty about the tech world. It's preference. It's just that on forums, a buncha pencil-dicks try and have a pissing contest and then it gets out of hand. Otherwise, I see Apple and its products for usability, not necessarily all out power. When you can't tell the difference in everyday use between most phone models, why would it matter?

Again, it's a pissing contest, using Quadrant tests, which we all here agree, really don't mean much about everyday use. Which is what I'm talking about.
I disagree. If you are a geek you want the fastest CPU, best screen and most ram. Apple don't have these.

You are a petrol head, right? Don't you feel superior to 2 litre Diesel Beemer drivers?

3 posts in a row... Woooh.

There is a place for IOS, and Coonie is right it is very smooth and responsive, but it is so limited. I think most techys would choose an Android OS, because they understand the benefits of "Open Source" and they see the limitations of Apple.

If Apple wasn't such a mass hyperbole machine... They probably wouldn't get the hate they get, but the y wouldn't have the fanboys either.

If it costs what a Galaxy S/Nexus S costs then fine. Whenever I looked it was the most expensive phone.
If it comes to plans then you basically pay for the phone with your plan, so the price is included.

See, NO. They are not fooled. They consider their options and buy ANYWAY. I know a couple computer science and engineering people who have chosen iOS over Android. They weren't fooled. They know their options. But they PREFER iOS. And you just can't get that through your thick head lol.
I think that a lot of them are. Most people don't consider their options and go for the Iphone because it's the easiest and most obvious option, because their friends have it, they know what it is, have a vision of how 'great' it is thanks to marketing etc. That's also one of the reasons why a lot of people go for Ipods. Ipod basically became a synonym of a mp3 player just like the Iphone is the first thing that a lot of people think when they hear "smartphone" or even "a mobile phone".
That's the same reason why Europeans used to go for Nokia phones. It was the first thing that people had in mind when shopping for a phone without even looking at superior alternatives.
Your examples are only single units who really are fine with their Iphones, who genuinely like it. I'm fine with that and I've come across a few guys who are like that too. That's why I said that it's one of many reasons, but from what I observed it affects a lot of people.

Well, see, there's my point, they have different uses. Not everyone wants to go fast. Some people want the drive of a BMW, but don't want to go fast. Or want something economical and easy on the wallet or more MPG. Diesels are "less customizable" or tuneable, but that doesn't make them bad, does it? A good portion of Europe is full of diesels, right? Are they stupid or any less of a car enthusiast than me and my dad's BMWs?

There's this gross misconception that geeks like tinkering with their shit. That's not always the case. Nor is tinkering with an OS limited to just one OS. You'd be surprised to learn most people buy phones and don't really give a shit about it after that. People are the same with cars computers, and other forms of technology. As long as it works they're happy. Whether it be a Blackberry or an iPhone or Android phone. Most don't give a shit and take sides in arguments about these things. So it's not the skill level of the users but moreso the interest in things about the OS that matter. And I think expert users can find satisfaction in both OSs
