Here's his letter.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

I wonder what led to this. Regardless - obviously the end of an era. I'm diametrically opposed to his business methods and the ethics of Apple as a company, but no doubt he's a visionary and deserves a lot of respect too. And of course, I have a lot of compassion for him as a fellow human being, because in all likelihood, this decision comes due to his failing health.

Not really sad. Jobs will still run the company and stuff will be unofficially approved by him. His title will change just so that when he takes extended time off, it won't be so heavily criticized. Still publicized but the death bells for Apple won't be ringing as loudly.

I personally think Apple needs a change in direction, although I had no problem with Jobs. I still feel more confident with him at the helm, but I want to see what others can do with the company, with the products, etc.

if you think for a second that he won't be "in the know" when it comes to all things AAPL, you're one foolish ass nucca.

Clearly. Big difference between being "in the know" and dictating the forward strategy though. The estimation is that given their release cycles of products, plans are finished for next years iPhone 6 and iPad 3, Apple's strategy for the cloud (which IMO is going to turn out as laughably as Microsofts), and of course the new Apple campus. Problem is, CEO's that operate in a dictator-esque capacity are successful because they put so much of themselves into the role. So what happens after that?

Bill Gates is still on the board of MS, but hasn't been the CEO since 2000, and look what's happening, under Ballmer's watch they are self destructing. Gates post-departure strategy lasted through XP and the original Xbox - both of which launched in 2001, both of which have been uber successful. After that, you get Ballmer's moves. Zune. Fail. Windows Vista. Fail. Kin. Fail. No early understanding of the role cloud services will play. Fail. Internet Explorer has been a fail for at least 5 years. Windows Phone 7, looking like a fail. Windows 7 OS and Kinect have been the only things MS has gotten right under Ballmer's watch. The first time Jobs left Apple, it almost completely crumbled to the point where they KNEW they had to hire him back to save it, a decade later.

I don't foresee things going well for Apple after the strategies Jobs has put in place have passed. You gotta think, what kind of CEO is Tim Cook gonna be? Because it's either gonna go two ways, he'll constantly ask himself "What would Steve do?", or he'll rebel against that and defiantly do things his own way. More than likely a conflicted mix of both.

There's a gossip that he resigned because he's aware that Apple are on top of the hill right now, and it's better to resign at that period.
I think it's a good theory, amongst different reasons that he might've had.

I don't know if you guys saw the picture of Steve Jobs that TMZ posted today.

Even though I'm anti-Apple as a company... on a purely compassionately level it's pretty upsetting to see. He is clearly a very ill man. I wish him the best.

It more than likely is. Even TMZ wouldn't stoop as far as faking a photo. And they have people on the ground EVERYWHERE.

They were the first to report MJ's death - they had people in the hospital. They literally broke the news. No other news channels were able to confirm it for hours. They have people on their payroll everywhere. Journos, paparazzi, hundreds of regular people who just sell them tips and stories all the time. Their level of privacy invasion is disgusting, and a sad reflection on the times we live in, but it's very rarely inaccurate.

But you know what.... I really hope it's not real.

Me too. I know what cancer can do to someone but....this just seems all too sudden. I dunno. This is worse than when he lost weight the first time and went from looking normal to the gaunt figure he's been the past couple of years.

That is really sad if it's true.

I wasn't aware that he's that ill. Realizing that you can be the head of one of the most expensive companies worldwide and still you aren't any less vulnerable to whatever life throws at you, no matter who you are. For some very strange reason I started thinking that it's possible that there are pharmaceutical companies that have a potential superior cure for that locked up somewhere, not giving a shit though only to earn a fraction of that money.

I'm sure the cure is out there, the price is just not high enough. They'd gladly take the amount of money Apple is worth, but even everything Jobs owns might not be enough for these companies. The extent of their greed is unfathomable, I think. Sometimes.
