Paleontologist Gays

October 20th, there is this thing going around twitter and facebook about wearing the color "purple" to honor the gays that committed suicide.

I saw the group and many people were complaining.

Some said, "yah, let's honor gays that killed themselves. lets honor suicide" (Sarcasm, obviously).

Some said, "that's not the point, the community or specific people pushed them over the edge, so we are doing this to fight against people who make gays feel bad."

To give an example of the last story I heard,

A gay guy was recorded having sex with his parter by his roommate. I don't know if he was a closet homo, or public, but the roommate put it on youtube and youporn and stuff like that.

The gay guy saw it, and suicided himself.

We know that Pink is October Breast Cancer Month and I think there are a few more, but not as very well advertised.

Do you believe that it's wrong or right to wear Purple on October, 20th?

You almost had it. There were about five potential thought-provoking topics and questions that you could have stated....

and you opted for the fucking purple color. Now, usually, I'd end the post here. But you always seem to be helpful with your answers in my threads so I can't be THAT much of a jackass this time.

It really isn't about whether it's right or wrong to wear purple tomorrow. For example, some people find it foolish to commemorate anything with clothing or lapels or pins. But, if one believes in that idea in general and likes the idea of commemorating events in such a fashion, then I don't see any problem with wearing purple to commemorate what appears to be a string of suicides in the last few months. There have been many articles in the news about the increase in suicides among bullied homosexuals and those perceived to be homosexuals. Also, I believe the guy, who went to Rutgers, didn't have sex but merely made out with another guy and then jumped off a bridge after finding out his roommate recorded him. Also, he did not "come out of the closet".

The real question is, should we stand up against this bullying? The answer is yes. Do I think wearing purple is a great way of doing it? The answer is no. We have to do a better job of educating our young ones and our peers that bullying on the basis of sexual orientation, or on the basis of anything, is wrong and shouldn't be tolerated. We have to do a better job of keeping schools and teachers accountable for letting bullying take place. But, most importantly, we as a society have to communicate to those who feel different that it's OK to be different and that it's OK to be homosexual. Legalizing same-sex marriage is one way of doing that.

Does anyone else think it's funny that when gay people get bullied they kill themselves and when straight people get bullied they shoot up the school. anyone? lol

Columbine still has quite the impact here in CO and I think I might have been the only person in my school defending the shooters. What they did was fucking horrible and they were some racist fucks but the bigger issue with me was the bullying that led them to do that. I remember how everyone was sort of pissed at me for in a way feeling bad for them, I still do, I dont see how you can't. It's not like I'm the only person in the world who felt this way, plenty of people did. It just had a big impact on the people at my school considering the school wasn't far from where I went and people were outraged and all. But yeah, bullying is a no no

My favorite thing was what Marilyn Manson said in the Michael Moore documentary about it. They asked him "If you could have said anything to the shooters, what would you have said?", and he replied "I wouldn't have said anything. I would have listened to them."

The way the media and public treated Marilyn was disgusting. They literally blamed him and his music for Columbine, and supposedly the kids weren't even fans, it was found out later.

Nice response. thanks. I usually don't opt to serious threads no more, just questions ppl usually don't think of to be different.

I opted to the color purple, because I feel if they do it or not, it's not enough. I was hoping someone would say so.

You offered the idea of educating our students; Casey implied listening to them. I think we do both, before the situations occur.

Regardless, the legalizing same-sex marriage is a good way to bring down hate, not now, but in the future. I think many people still hate on it. When our children grow up, they hopefully will not resort to bullying because they will see things like that are 'accepted' in society.

@Aron - Honestly, I never felt sorry for them. After your view point, I guess I CAN see it, but that doesn't make it excusable. I'm not saying suicide is excusable either. I think we should also find ways to not only stop bullying, but a stronger mind to avoid suicides.

By this logic, Blacks would still be getting lynched in the South on the daily and wouldn't have any rights because, guess what, there's still hate! You don't legalize and enforce equal human rights when no one minds the equality anymore. You legalize it when people have a problem with it. So no, the time is now.

Yuuup. Like this dont ask dont tell debacle going on in the military right now, ridiculous. You will not reach acceptance by turning your back to an issue, acceptance only comes through understanding

Can I have a problem with the ribbon-thing, though? Like Carlin stated?
Sure. I didn't actually read the thread. I saw it was made by Shadows, read the first two lines and figured he wouldn't say anything worth reading. Saw SOFI's post and found out I was correct, then made my post, which probably isnt worth reading :)

Back to studying paleo I go.
