Barcelona agrees to sign Valencia striker David Villa for C$51 million
By The Associated Press (CP) – 45 minutes ago

BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona agreed to sign striker David Villa from Valencia on Wednesday in a transfer worth 40 million euros (C$51.2 million).

Villa will undergo a medical scan Friday before signing a four-year contract with an option for a fifth, the Spanish champions said on their website.

The 28-year-old Villa scored 21 league goals for third-place Valencia last season and is Spain's second all-time leading scorer. The Asturias native scored 28 goals in 45 games overall last season.

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain said Villa would complement Barcelona's quick-passing possession game perfectly.

"Like Lionel (Messi) he's a combination of a centre forward or also a right winger who can float to the middle," Begiristain said. "His profile is that of a player who is skilful at crossfield movement and (he) manoeuvres very well in open space since he has great depth."

Villa has 206 goals in 393 appearances since his debut for Sporting Gijon in 2003, which included two seasons at Zaragoza before arriving at Valencia in 2005.

Villa was the leading scorer at the 2008 European Championship, helping Spain win the title. He has scored 36 goals in 55 games for Spain and is closing in on Raul Gonzalez's leading total off 44 in 102 appearances.

Villa's arrival will put Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry's futures under scrutiny following sub-par seasons by both strikers.

Begiristain said Ibrahimovic was not for sale but, like with Henry, left the door open for an exit.

"Like always, (Ibrahimovic) needs to be happy. He needs to feel comfortable in the team and he needs to decide," Begiristain said of the Sweden striker, who scored 21 goals in all competitions.

Henry was mostly relegated to the substitutes bench over the second half of the season and finished with only four goals. The France striker has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer despite having one year left on his deal with Barcelona.

"It's mostly up to him if he wants to be here or to go somewhere far away where he can be a leader again," Begiristain said.

^^they went after him immediately after the Inter defeat. THey realised that Ibrahimovic was a bad mistake and moved quick to rectify it

was looking at some of the stats from Barca games in the champions league and in the games against Inter i think it was, Ibrahimovic wasnt that much ahead of Valdes in yards covered during the game.

Ben Foster to Birmingham

think Kevin Doyle is being linked with Arsenal.

i want Doyle at Liverpool. i think he would be ideal. we should have went for him instead of Keane that time. would have saved a lot of money as well and Doyle has a better attitude i.e he wouldnt throw his toys out of the pram if he was on the bench.

Ibrahimovic hasn't been a big game player for quite a while - by that I mean with some consistancy. When's the last time he was? Euro 2004?

- Dudu is linked with Lyon and CSKA Moscow for 6 to 7 MIL.
- Klasnic on the verge of resigning with Bolton, despite being linked with Hoffenheim, Newcastle, Celtic and St Pauli
- Domagoj Vida (Croatian U21 talent) signs with Bayer Leverkusen. It's big news for us, since he's a defender, and Kovac has retired from the NT, he's his future replacement hopefully.

never really. massively overrated imo. but he has some nice tricks and i do like watching him in action at times. too lazy though. never a fit for Barcelona's style of football.

my predictions for the transfer window

Arsenal will sign a black player. most likely French of African descent

Manchester City will pay well over the odds for mediocre players

Manchester United will buy more than one player

Liverpool will buy no one :(

Man City want Milninho (£20m initial bid rejected) and Spurs want Ashley Young (£16m + add-ons, maybe Jenas).

I say reject both bids, keep those players at the club and strengthen, not weaken.

I really dont want Luke Young or Curtis Davies to leave. Wilfred Bouma is leaving on a free transfer so if our defence picks up a few suspensions or injuries we'll be F'd. Beye should just leave.

if you think Ibrahimovic was worth what Barca paid for him, has been a success for them, hasnt disrupted their team, fits in with their style of play, or is a better player than Eto'o (Eto'o reaches another final), then you need your head checked.

However, im not saying he is a bad player or a chump. As i said i like watching him at times but i have always had reservations over him.

Liverpool linked with Sampdoria's Reto Ziegler.

he has had a fine season. can play at lb and lm. if he does leave Samp then id like him to go to Liverpool and not Juve who also want him.

Worth what Barca paid for him? Hell no. A straight up swap with Eto'o would've been more than enough.

A succes for Barca? Not yet at any length. But it's only been one season. You are quick to judge.

Disrupted their team? Nonsense.

Fits in with their style of play? Well, yes, on paper moreso than Eto'o. Ibra is a better "footballer" (not saying striker or goalscorer here) than Eto'o by a mile or so.

Better player? Can't tell. In any case, reaching finals isn't a yardstick of course for any individual player. Last I checked there's still at least 11 men on the pitch and even more on a team. Maybe DJ Manny can help us out on that, since he cleared up that crazy away goal thing for us last time.

No but really, I think on paper Ibra is a fantastic central striker for Barca, but yes they overpaid and yes he didn't live up to the expectations this year. But I say give him another season to prove it.

he is not even a better football than him and yes it is obvious he doesnt fit them like Eto'o. how can you argue otherwise. Eto'o can play the 3 position across the attack. left, right, centre. They had the option of interchanging the 3 during matches. That all went out the window when Ibrahimovic arrived. He can play centre forward. that is it. Eto'o could also drop deep in matches and cover. With Ibrahimovic centre forward Messi has to play more central to support him.

Also, Eto'o is a much quicker footballer on and off the ball and in his thinking. His movement is much better.
which suited Barcelona's style of football down to the ground. Ibrahimovic on the other hand is lazy and static.

Eto'o has also a better character. he is tougher ,has a winners mentality and has done it in big matches. Reaching finals and scoring in them is a damn good yardstick of a player imo.

not to mention that his goalscoring record in all competitions has been better.

I wouldnt have even swapped Eto'o for Ibrahimovic, let alone gave them 40 million (?) as well. but they reckon that Laporta didnt like him or his character. Maybe he was too outspoken for goody goody Laporta and his Barcelona.
