Mosque to go up near New York's ground zero

So apparently a community center with a prayer room equals a mosque. Okay. Does anyone else realize that there was a "mosque" on the 17th floor of 2 World Trade Center, the southern tower?

I really think this is important.

Park51 has faced opposition for a variety of reasons. One prominent one that dominates the public sphere is that Ground Zero is seen as "hallowed ground". Some three thousand people lost their lives due to terrorists who said they did it in the name of Islam. So, it's not a surprise why some people are uneasy about it. It's not really an issue of whether Islam is evil or not. So, when there was a mosque on the WTC floor, it wasn't a problem because it was in an area that wasn't bombed by Islamic terrorists before. 9/11 changed everything.

Again, I am not against Park51 being built in that planned location, but some of the reasons FOR it don't hold much water.

The Trade Center was bombed by Islamic terrorists in 1993. The prayer room stayed.

Also, if you go back and read my (too many) posts in this thread, you'll see that I agree with almost everything you're saying, and that I've said most of it already.

Here's the symbolic point I was trying to make: Muslim terrorists will destroy anyone, including other Muslims. There is a clear distinction between the people building this community center and the monsters who knocked down the WTC. It seems to me that too many people on this board are happy to condemn anything that falls under the banner of Islam.

Oh, right, forgot. There are significant differences, though, the number of casualties being one.

As far as this board goes, the majority who post in this WoW forum tend to be anti-religion so that doesn't help the case at all. Then you have those who not only despise religion, but hold ill will towards Islam specifically.

Couldn't agree more, S O F I. At times it seems like this board is made up exclusively of Canadian atheists.

My personal thing is my personal thing. I don't believe in God. But I won't lecture anyone about it either.

I put myself in the position as a muslim. If I was a muslim, I'd be against the building of a mosque at Ground Zero. I'd think not only was it insulting to those that lost their lives there, as those who bombed it claimed it was in the name of Islam.... But I'd also find that it was detrimental to the 99% of muslims who believe in peace. It would also be bad for American Islamic relations.

So.. I conclude that the majority of those in favour of this, are extremists.

And those who oppose it by demonstrating, or threatening.... Are also extremists.

And those who burn Koran's..... Are retarded.

Two horrible conclusions you made there.

^You think because you assert yourself in a position as a Muslim that you have achieved anything? lawl gtfo.

I have also concluded that you are an extremist in many parts of your life. And no, I don't think I acheived anything.

Two horrible conclusions you made there.

Another conclusion I have made is that you are a religious drone, also. Just from that post. If I am wrong, please correct me. But I am pretty sure you are a bible basher, because of the parts you highlighted.

I should have worded my post differently but it was after a night out and I was drunk. Anyway, it seems that around your parts the word "extremist" carries some sort of negative connotation but for me, I don't see it as an insult at all haha. Cheers.

Nah. I use the same definition as the dictionary. I also, wasn't insulting. In the case of religion I do see it as an insult as I am an atheist. Those in religious circles, may not.
