World Cup 2010

I've finished watching the game for a 2nd time and here are some pointers that I think.

* Make Eduardo (Portuguese Goalkeeper) the captain of the Portuguese national side & let C. Ronaldo just play his natural game. He isn't a leader, never was, never will be. However the passion and intensity that Eduardo has shown through out the World Cup tournament has been second to none. We deserve someone like him leading us around. We deserve pride in the jersey, anthem and country like he shows 100% of the time.

* Good win though by Espana. When they play united and together for each other, Espana are a very formidable side. Portugal didn't attack enough and the passing game from Espana was clincal and well executed. Time for Portugal to rebuild their mid field flanks and to find a decent striker whom can finish an attacking set piece and actually find the back of the net. Espana have to fix their defense against counter attacks to win this cup. That's the only area where they are shaky. All the best Espana!

* You tried & toiled hard all game Portugal. In the end a 1-0 defeat was enough to send us home but hold your heads high. There is a bright future and maiden World Cup championship right around the corner for a Selecção das Quinas. Let's look towards EURO 2012 and the World Cup in Brasil in 2014. We've conquered Brasil once already, let's do it again. only this time on the football field!. Viva PORTUGAL!

* All refs were Spanish speaking refs from former Spanish ruled nations. How that happened in this day and age with thousands of refs from different places I'll never know. FIFA have ruined their main attraction with poor refs, poor decisions and biased calls for the big nations.

* If you touch a player at the world cup with a fingernail it's an instant penalty but if you touch c.ronaldo with a punch to the face it's basically play on? Where's the consistency? The red card on Costa was a disgrace. Did he even touch the Spanish player?

* Spain eventually will play either Argentina or Germany, if they beat Paraguay. They'll be going home soon enough.

* I'm going for Uruguay, Paraguay, Ghana and Brasil now. I hope the Germans, Dutch, Spanish all go home in a few days. Argentina look the best team so far however.

Eduardo was great. Looked world class.
He is from SC Braga too. A smallish team in the Portuguese Liga which almost won it this season (finished 2nd behind Benfica, after being on top of the comp for most of the season). Expect big money thrown his way soon by some big team.

On a side note, the day Jose Mourinho and the Portuguese Football come to a peace treaty and he becomes the national coach/manager, is the day the Portuguese national team show their full potential on the park.

next person that tells me that C Ronaldo is one of the all time greats of football, i will kick their ass.

let his country down with a bang yesterday. Only played for himself.

Deserved win for Spain anyway. i hope Torres can get back to his best in the next game. he doesnt look right at all.

Alonso has been fantastic so far in this WC.

Eduardo was excellent and the left back Contreao had a good tournament.

Quieroz is a crap manager as well.

the sending off was correct. Costa elbowed him.

if Spain beat Paraguay they will be there until the second last day of the tournament at least. They have a great chance of winning it now.

C Ronaldo is a superego, selfish player.... worried about Ads, Sponsors and his looks on the big LED Tvs on the Stadium

In the last 15min he was looking the ball go side to side...

C. Ronaldo is a club player, not an NT player. We all have them in our respective countries. Sometimes it's vice-versa... it's just the way it is at times.

Ronaldo spits at TV camera

Print By Soccernet staff

Cristiano Ronaldo's disappointing World Cup ended on a sour note as he was caught spitting towards a cameraman following Portugal's 1-0 loss to Spain in the second round.

Portugal captain Ronaldo reacted angrily to the cameraman's attempts to follow him off the pitch in close proximity immediately after the final whistle, waving him away before spitting in his direction while looking down the barrel of the camera, an act that was broadcast around the world.

While he was taking his frustration out on the man behind the lens, Ronaldo's spit appeared to the global audience to be directed towards them in an ugly act that could upset many of the fans of one of football's most marketable men.

Ronaldo failed to fire in the tournament, scoring just once in Portugal's 7-0 thrashing of DPR Korea and otherwise lacking involvement as his side went scoreless in their other three matches.

After the match, he told reporters to "talk to Carlos Queiroz" about Portugal's elimination from the World Cup. During the second half of the second round match, in which David Villa scored the only goal not long after the break, Ronaldo appeared frustrated as Queiroz issued a string of tactical instructions from the sideline that ultimately failed to bring Ronaldo, or Portugal, into the game.
Can't find any youtube vids of it - FIFA has trademarked it lol

I think Ronaldo is better than Messi. There are a lot of average players in that Portugal team. He can't do it on his own.

2 words. Pedro Mendes.

Here's an article on England's failures - Fewer chances for younger talent in a culture of fear - The Irish Times - Tue, Jun 29, 2010
The dearth of truly creative players coming through England’s youth academies is alarming. It can’t be there aren’t kids with creativity in them; just, in a culture of fear
that is so true. name me two truly creative English midfield players at the moment? the only one i can think of is Paul Scholes and he is old now and retired from England for years now.

And while there is an emphasis on physicality in the English game, they dont even have a decent midfield destroyer either.

I agree, I read a great article yesterday that listed 12 steps, short term and long term that should be implemented in order to drastically improve the english game. I can't remember every point but some were:

Investing more in youth coaches and facilities.

Limiting the number of foreign players in the premier league.

Reduce the size of Junior football pitches to encourage creativity rather than playing long balls.

Integrate younger players from the U21 squad with the senior squad in order to provide valuable experience.

another problem is that there is too much competition at underage level. Coaches want to win so badly that they discourage players from being creative and attempting to do a trick or trying something different. If a kid is trying to play a hard pass or trying to beat his man with a bit of skill then inevitably they will give the ball away, but unfortunately, instead of encouraging them to try again the coach will tell them not to do it again or dont give the ball away by doing that or even worse they will sub the kid with one who will just keep it simple because they dont have the ability to do anything else. the creativity and skill is being coached out of them if anything

i remember when i was playing football at u14 and u16 level. i could never play in my favoured position i.e central midfield simply because i wasnt big enough. we always had two big hoofers in central midfield and i would have to play up front where i wasnt suited to even though i had far more skill and had my passing was much better than the guys that played there. it used to really piss me off. Also, if i ever tried a hard pass or did some skill id get given out to even if i pull it off. yet if the shit full back hoofed the ball away for a throw he'd get praise for it.

they need to do away with coaches and this intense competition up to say the age of 16 and just let the kid play and enjoy football properly.

you look at the great Brazilian players for example. most of them just played football all the time on the streets with their friends as kids
