In Mexico, they also celebrate Spain's victory in World Cup final
By Peter Orsi (CP) – 14 hours ago

MEXICO CITY — Thousands of jubilant, flag-waving fans in Mexico celebrated Spain's World Cup triumph on Sunday, a joyful reminder of the historical ties to Iberia through language, culture and the legacy of conquest.

After the final whistle blew in Spain's 1-0 victory over the Netherlands, about 2,500 revellers converged at the Plaza de Cibeles in Mexico City's trendy Roma Norte district. They banged drums, blew vuvuzelas and marched around a fountain chanting and singing.

Police officials said the crowd might rise to 4,000, and set up barricades to keep fans from jumping into the fountain.

The Cibeles monument is an exact copy of the fountain of the same name in the Spanish capital where Madrid fans traditionally celebrate important football victories. It was dedicated in 1980 and donated by the local Spanish community.

"Spain deserved it," said Manolo Ruiz, a Spaniard. "They were due to win it."

Ruiz then pulled out a wine skin, held it at arms length, and poured toward his mouth, with much of the red wine splashing on his face and red and yellow Spanish jersey.

"Today, anything goes," he said.

Tens of thousands of Spaniards reside in Mexico, according to Spanish government voter rolls. And many Mexicans also feel a close personal tie to the country of Cervantes, though others reject the former colonial master and refer to Spaniards derogatorily as "gachupines."

"When it comes to football, we are more Spanish," said Fernando Llorente, who was born in Mexico but has Spanish roots. He said other Mexicans with parents from Spain feel the same loyalty to Spain's national team.

Llorente was wearing a red and yellow fury wig, and he was ready to party.

"Tonight it is time to celebrate and enjoy the triumph — until the body gives out," he said.

Similar celebrations broke out at Mexico City's Cibeles in 2008 after Spain won the European championship.

On Sunday, a few blocks away from the fountain, fans packed the cavernous, Spain-themed Covadonga cantina during the match. The popular watering hole is named after an eighth-century battle in Asturias in northern Spain, which is considered the beginning of the Christian reconquest.

"This is the biggest thing that could happen," said Spaniard Antonio Cabrera, from the southern city of Jaen, the heart of Spain's olive-growing industry. "It is going to be the biggest party that has ever been celebrated over there."

Then he added with lament: "It is too bad I am here."

Did you really think Spain was " that much better " tonight?

Go ahead...disqualify yourself of any future participation in a football thread...

I'm daring you, get into a real analytical discussion with me. I can and will be arrogant as fuck about this.
lol. Yes, I think that Spain played better football. Not "that much better" if it comes to their skills and whatnot.
Okay since it seems to be important to you let me explain what I thought:
That match sucked in my opinion. I was very into football in the past, I stopped caring years ago so now I look at it from a different perspective. I want to watch a nice, fair and good game between 2 world-class teams. That's what I expect from the world cup finals.
I didn't like Spain's game too but I thought they played a nicer football but my judgement was mainly based on the fact that they didn't foul as much. While I agree that this referee was a joke but Netherlands fouled like crazy and that gave me a specific outlook on the match. I really dislike games like that.
The point I was trying to make was that watching Netherlands yesterday felt much worse than watching Spain play despite the fact that I preferred Netherlands as a team because I think Spanish team is full of fags.

We did start a bit heavy, but Webb was being a pansy and Spain were diving quite a fair bit.

teams like mexico are used to losing thats why they find better teams to cheer for when this time comes...
look at portugal, whenever they're eliminated they always hop on the brasil bandwagon...

and Iniesta's shirt said something along the lines of "I won the diving battle today suckaaaaaaaaas!!!"

nah it said someting like "Dani you will never be forgotten" for a spanish player who died last year apparently

The problem with this is that people had already said this World Cup would suck before it began, so they will be more negative towards it But the thing is 2006 started great but the knockouts were boring as fuck, 2002 was tarnished by awful refs, I don't remember much about 1998 apart from I didn't feel the French were actually that good. I only saw the final in 94 (my first ever live game).

Overall this world cup follows up where 2006 left off, big players failing to turn up, poor refs and a boring final and no real stand out talents. But a lot of great sporting moments can be taken from the world cup. I enjoyed seeing a few teams play but I feel that the games were far too tactical, which is understandable but It is literally like watching a chess game.

Aye, true. I don't mind a tactical game, i still see enough good and bad moments, but it's no fireworks. There's no sparkle.

Brazil and Nethies, traditionally sparkling teams, very businesslike and efficient this tourney. Spain dominated every match they played, but slow-paced, very sideways passing, not sparkly either, not at all.

Argentina fucked up. Germany was faced with hilarious poor opponents. England, France, Italy, Portugal = teh lulz.
