Basically it's not even close. Yes, there are some good players (Ernie Stewart), but usually these are "good" for US standards and "decent" for European levels.

Football isnt "big" enough in the States.
yeah i found that.. Im an assistant coach for my local team in the US (Apparently cos im British Im an expert  ) anyway most of the kids on the team follow the European football especially the Premiership, although they do have some American players in it now

It is growing though. According to Wiki it's one of the top sports played amongst young kids in the U.S. today. Whether this continues on into High School and beyond remains to be seen.
Yea it is growing. they advertising big time. doing exciting commercials in TV, in schools kids are giving interest and stuff like that. plus they doing advertisments with Beckham and as some of you might already know Beckham is planning to play here sometime in future so, that will definetly help grow soccer in this country.
so theres no question there is a bright future for this country as far as soccer goes.

like it or not it could catch up some other big time leagues in future like Seria A and Premierlegue and might even be one of the biggest legues in the world. but i dont see that happening any time soon but it could happend though.

"Soccer" is the best sport in the world. Unfortunately, Americans don't seem to have caught onto it very much.
Unfortunately...

If you ask an american whats the best sport in the world they'll say either baseball or football. if you ask him why? they'll say because baseball/football is the best sport in the america.
so, what conclusion would you come up with after that conversation? that america is the whole world and there are no other countries nor their opinions matter.

In Europe, MLS is sometimes seen as a 'retirement home' for footballers. Once players get to a certain age and can't cope with the pressures of their respective league they go to the MLS where they can pick up an easy paycheck without really exerting themselves (see; Youri Djorkaeff). That's a bit of a dated view, though.
yes, MLS=Qatar premier league

Whenever there's a timeout or stoppage in a game you can be sure an ad break will follow ;) As there's no timeout's in Soccer or any other cause for breaks (excluding serious injuries) the window for ad's is non-existent. Therefore the networks and their major sponsers aren't particular fans of it. As in most things it's the major networks which dictate what sports recieve the most exposure and thus which are the most popular.
yeah that's why the adbands were created...

Get Real.

As for the atmosphere, I went to a football game in Quebec City last week, when the team from Montreal came to play here....it sucked....they only chanted OLEEEE OLE OLE OLEEEEEEEE......they do not get it's ALLEZ ALLEZ (which means "go" in french) and it's "ole" in spanish....

i agree that they only chant "Let's go ______!!! Let's GO!!!!"

FORTUNATLY!!!!! There is europeans in Quebec, so 7-8 of them came and chanted some football songs as "Montreal *clapclapclap* MONTREAL*clapclapclap*"

I mean, i went to a football match in Croata and Bosnia...it's crazy.... everytime the ref did some mistake they chanted "Sudac Amater, Jebemo ti Mater" or "Sudija Turcine, napusi se kurcine" Only the ex-yugos will understand :) (it means "the ref is an amateur, we fuck his mother" or "Ref, you turk(this is not racist it's a common synonim for bastard, it's been used in france and the balkans since the 1700's) suck some cocks"

I really feel sorry for the Americans, i mean the sports they enjoy just seem to have no atmosphere about them, people just turn up and sit on there ass for how ever long the game is for. but with Football its so much more exciting and the atmosphere is great.
I am not a soccer (football) fan so go easy on me. Isn't there riots after almost every soccer game? I remember seeing the BBC News and it just seems to me that I always hear about the fans trampeling or killing each other in games.

No. There used to be a hooligan problem in the late 80's/early 90's but that's been completely sorted out. Even at it's height it was very much a minority of games which would end up in riots.

The thing is, you'd never see a riot at an American sports game because the fans are as passionate as Robots ;)

Ole ole is a common chant all over the world. Why would they chant "Go, Go"

It would be great if someone was able upload a clip from Anfield when Liverpool beat Chelsea in the CL semi final to show the Americans how a game atmosphere should be! The renditions of "Fields of Anfield Road" and "Youll never walk Alone" were spine chilling!

I was watching baseball yesterday and the crowd just talked amognst eachother for most of it. Have a singalong instead.

The casual thing was at its peak in the early to mid eighties!

By 1987/ 1988 everyone started dabbling with drugs an mellowed out.

You should have seen when Croatia played Serbia at waterpolo here..

I was there. Croatians we're yelling: ''Pobjedilismo rat!'' Serbs would be yelling: ''Viste Na Veci pikice'' and it went on and on with other swearing. A fight almost broke out, lol, it was great. Apperently we had the best Waterpolo match in all of the FINA here. They even doubled security just for us. :D

The thing that struck me about soccer in the US was the fans. In the UK, fans will chant almost constantly whether winning or losing. Plus, the chants will often be clever or innovative or humorous. In the US, they have two chants; "Let's Go _____" and "U-S-A".
so fucking true! i'm sure If Europeans went to Mexico, Argentina or any country in south America, you would enjoy the atmosphere, since we like to chant funny shit too :thumb:

What is your point?
that fans in america or american soccer fans arent same as other countries excitement wise? yes of course they not. but that dont mean that cant be changed. fans in america just dont have passion for the soccer like they have for other sports but that dont mean soccer cant become big like it is in other countries.

Riots occur. The last game my dad went to when it was Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb (Croatian clubs), there was a riot afterwards, like these clubs are rivals and Dinamo won. Every car showing any slight supporting of Dinamo were flipped over by Hajduk fans. lol.

My dad was one of those Dinamo supporters, but he took off his flag in the car, so his wasn't flipped over, while the one behind his and in front were.

LOL.

And if you thought that i was talking about the Olés that the fans yell after every pass when their team dominates...well i aint talking about that one ;)
