HUGE BLAST ROCKS BEIRUT

A massive car bomb blast has rocked central Beirut, Lebanon, killing at least nine people and wounding dozens, police say.

The huge blast, which broke windows in buildings up to a mile away, is reported to have happened near a five-star hotel.

TV footage from the scene shows widespread damage with buildings reduced to rubble, many cars on fire and bodies on the street.

One man was seen trying to escape from a burning car and it is feared more bodies will be round under the twisted wreckage of burnt-out cars and destroyed buildings.

The death toll is likely to rise.

Rescue workers and paramedics are at the scene, which is reminiscent of Lebanon's civil war.

Many bodies are feared to be buried in the rubble

Authorities said it was the biggest bombing since the war, which ripped apart the capital during the 1980s.

Cars in the motorcade of ex-prime minister Rafik Hariri, who resigned last autumn, were caught in the blast, witnesses said.

There is speculation the bombing, carried out at noon local time, was aimed at Hariri.

Some of his bodyguards are among the dead but there is no word on Hariri.

No group has claimed responsibility.

A car bomb has killed at least eight people, including the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, on Beirut's seafront, police say.

Al-Hariri's motorcade was blown up on Monday as it passed along an exclusive section of the city's waterfront Corniche.

The explosion close to the St George Hotel gouged a deep crater out of the road, ripped facades from luxury buildings and left half a dozen cars ablaze on streets carpeted with rubble.

It appeared to be the biggest bomb in the city since the Lebanese civil war ended in 1990. The blast could be heard even outside Beirut's city limits and shattered windows in buildings hundreds of metres away.

Al-Hariri, who resigned from government last October, has recently joined calls by the opposition for Syria to quit Lebanon in the run-up to general elections in May.

Newtvsat, a local television station, showed several cars burning in the streets and widespread damage.

TV footage also showed smouldering bodies. Passersby were seen trying to rescue victims of the blast, covering them with jackets to put out the flames.

No one has yet to claim responsibility for the explosion.

the worst part is the repercussions in the next few days...
I don't know what to expect.

every time this country tries to get back on its feets, they keep pushing us down.
The assassination of X-prime minister Hariri is sure to send this country 10 years back at least.

i m telling you though, this is not over

from what i heard on the news, he stepped down as prime minister and joined the opposition party. There was an assassination attempt on another politician of the same party awhile ago too.
