well he says combining both is pretty hard. so its actually safer for yourself being feared because this way the chance something negative will happen to you is smaller than being loved. basically he is talking about the "strength of love".

I interpreted it differently. I didn't read any of Machiavelli's stuff, but I think he's talking about leadership. As a leader of a country or a leader of a group of assassins, for example, it's best for them to fear you and think that you will kill them if they do you wrong, then for them to think you're a nice guy and that you will forgive them and be their friend. People that love you can do damage to you, but people that fear you will rather hesitate.

its a mixture of what u and bereal think.machiavelli acctually said be both , but if ur better at 1 aspect or if u cant do both, its better to just be feared.
