Get a G2 now or wait to get a Vibrant 4G on Feb 23rd? I'm gonna end up selling either one to hop on the dual core maybe even quad core band wagon down the line either later this year or early next year so yeah

G2, cos keyboard is epic and stock Android. Fuck that TouchWiz shit.

Plus, root is easy as hell and CM6 and the CM7 nightlies run flawlessly. I think a stable CM7 is not far off.

Eh I want a keyboard but at the same time I don't really need one. I'm gonna throw a custom ROM on either one regardless so I'm not worried about touchwiz. It does sick badly though. I like the 4g better I think. Only thing it is missing is the keyboard. I've used a front facing camera for video calls before and I think its something I'm gonna be doing a bunch of, I'm leaning towards the vibrant as a temp phone, temporary for like 6 months or so

would it not be possible to wait a little longer to get the Dual core phone you eventually want?

From my brother's word, the battery life on the Galaxy S isnt that great. I would therefore say the G2 based on Casey's reasons above and from my own experience too. I love it. However, if you have Swype, then you may feel as though having a physical qwerty is less of a necessity. The G2 should be cheaper too.

I'd personally stick with a single core phone and not go for a dual core one. Battery life will really drain on a dual core. You'll have dual core for stuff that a single core already does quite impressively. I dont see why you'd want a dual core handset in this moment in time unless you have a) the tendency to brag about your latest phone or b) money to blow. think about it...

yeah I can't think what would you need a faster CPU for unless you have some traumatic memories after using a first-gen 528mhz qualcomm ;-)

However there has to be a demand since they are releasing these dual-core beasts quite soon so I suppose that people have their reasons.

Between the new Vibrant and G2 I would pick the Vibrant simply because of the most awesome display technology known to man. It's a pleasure just to stare at it in its full glory. The G2 packs a rather average LCD (simple tn tft).
Also it seems to be better overall except of the physical keyboard.
So really can't live without a physical keyboard -> G2.
Don't really need one -> Vibrant.
imo. The capacitive sensor in new high end Samsungs is the best of the best so typing is relatively easy and best you can get on a modern touchscreen.

all good points masta, but ive had such a good touchscreen experience with the G2 that im not even using the slide out qwerty as much. I'll still have the option between the two though.

ARon. You had the G1 right? Well, you'll adapt to the G2 very quickly and the modding is much easier on it. I had a bad experience modding the Samsung Galaxy because Odin v3.1 messed up on me.

Either way, the Galaxy S is a great phone... love it. You might have remembered around midway through last year banging on about how i wanted the Samsung Galaxy S Pro (Epic 4G) and was even considering getting the normal Galaxy S. I just hate the TouchWiz.

And the internal SD card? what's that all about. In the File Manager there is an SD card (external) located within the SD card (internal)... :S I guess there's a partition with the on-board memory.

The G2's LCD is very reponsive, very nice. However, on mine, if you look for it you can see it flicker - dont know why. just the brightness settings which i set as really low i guess.

I like both phones so i would recommend either. its your decision that counts in the end anyway.

ALSO... The Samsung Galaxy S2 is going to be a dual-core phone... will that not be 4G enabled on its respective carriers?

Sandeep has a good point ARon. They are announcing the Galaxy S2 next month at Mobile World Congress. I don't see the point in getting a Vibrant 4G when the sequel is about to come out. At least with the G2 you know the G3 isn't just around the corner.

Plus, like Sandeep said, modding it might be harder and you'll have to wait for it to get rooted and then for a decent ROM to be available. There's no CyanogenMod for any Samsung device except the Nexus S at this stage.

Well, I wouldn't get a phone at the moment anyway. There's mobile world congress between 14 and 17 February in Barcelona. They'll be announcing new phones for this year.

Best time, in my opinion, is during the holidays. Just seems all the good ones come out then and priced reasonably well.

I know about Mobile World Congress just like I knew about CES, those shows are for ANNOUNCING phones. I need a phone now. For the past month I've had to keep my G1 plugged in because the battery is shot so I can't use it when it is off a charger. So no, I don't want to wait any longer, the 23rd is the longest I'll wait. I get an upgrade through t-mobile so I'll only have to spend $200 for a new phone, regardless of what it is, only like $100 if I get the G2. No new 2 year contract shit so I don't get the G2 for free or $50. What I plan on doing and what i do on occasion just to make some extra money is this. Say I buy the Vibrant 4G for $200 and when a new phone comes out down the line I sell the Vibrant for roughly $400 and only have to spend around $100 for a brand new phone. Simple stuff. I can just go buy a battery and wait but nah, this phone is now ancient and I need something new. I'm probably going to get the Vibrant 4G and then sell it down the road for something else. I want a front facing camera cus I skype with people. I will like the screen a lot more and some other aesthetic reasons. I don't think either phone is that attractive but the G2 is borderline ugly, and yes I care about how my shit looks. And I don't agree with the easy to root no CM comments at all. I'm rooting my phone already, if I wanted something easy to use I'd go get an iPhone ya dig. With my G1 I've been with CM 90% of the time, for a while nothing touched it, nothing even close, now not so much. CM is bloated. I like builds that are based off of CM but are stripped down a little bit and also faster. Galaxy phones get mad love in the developer community as well so I'm not worried about finding a suitable ROM.

We should start a little discussion here as well. Phones are getting a lot more powerful by the quarter it seems like. Dual Core phones are out now, sort of. The PSP 2 has a quad core chip and every chip maker has one down the line for a release later this year or early next year. Our phones can do pretty much everything. I use mine constantly it seems like, browsing the web, recording video, talking, texting, using apps, whatever. The more power I have the better. Yes, apps aren't really made to utilize dual core chips but that's nothing to be wary about. It's not like developers don't want to use the best thing out there, they're gonna make the apps useful ya know. I see no reason why to be hesitant in to adopting a new technology. Battery life, yes. But dual core and quad core chips are better for battery life than say a G2 over clocked to 1.whatever ghz. We are making our phones do things that are going to need the processing prowess that these phones have so yeah, why be scared of a dual core and later on a quad core phone. I do really wish there was something very reasonable within the next year or two for better battery performance but everything I seem to be reading are new discoveries and that will take forever for that discovery to come to the market.

Skype for Android doesn't support video chat as of yet. Neither does Gtalk as of Gingerbread. Honeycomb obviously has it, but unless they add GTalk to the Market like they did with Maps and YouTube, it won't be till Ice Cream. I guess there's third party video solutions. Don't know when Skype are gonna sort their shit out. I've yet to find a situation where I wanted or needed to video chat and didn't have my laptop right next to me. Of course that's just me.

Anyway looks like I'm picking up a Nexus S for my cousin when I arrive in the US next week. He was wondering whether he should hold out for something with a dual core....but I asked my other cousin who is a developer on the Android core apps team and he advised to go with the NS. Again, Android won't be optimized for dual core processors until Ice Cream at the absolute earliest..... which I doubt will drop into AOSP until summer assuming they announce it at I/O in May. If they don't announce Ice Cream at I/O then it may not even be until fall.

G2 is borderline ugly? You must be smoking some crack son. That shit is an industrial thing of beauty. All Samsung phones feel like cheap plasticky shit to me. Not feeling any of them bar the Epic 4G and Sidekick 4G cos those keyboards=win. HTC are still running this shit for me for design. I'd place Moto second, then LG, and then MAYBE Samsung after that.

Have you thought about getting a shit battery for $5 off eBay just to last you a few more months so you don't rush your decision? I feel you on the battery dying part, but if there's a phone that comes out this summer or late-spring with features you want, you may regret it.

I know one that no one seems to be paying attention to but is somewhat of a deal-maker for me is camera. I want an 8MP or better. I'm sure they will be better soon, like 10 or 12MP, but I want to take HD video and pictures with it.

Two things people are focused on that I couldn't give less of a shit about are LTE and dual-core phones. I read quad-cores could be out early next year. Still, the fact we're even talking about those before duals are released is just ridiculous. I doubt I'll use programs that utilize dual cores and I doubt I'll use an app that would benefit from 4G speeds. And at $10 extra per month, and most likely with a cap of 2 GB or something, fuck that shit. I'l wait until every city, big or small, has 4G equipment before I switch. 3G is plenty fast for me and I stream ESPN Radio and Radiotime all the time. Never skips a beat.

It's funny you shit on dual cores but then say you want to record in HD video. If you want 1080p you almost need dual core.

Casey, I just don't like the silver, I like black phones. The Vibrants front is black but the back is a silverish color, it's weird but I like the front of it. Nexus S is by far the sexiest phone, I'd get that if i was able to use my tmob discount to get it

I don't remember if I gave my lil review of the Motorola Defy. Out of the box, I did not like it, Motoblur widgets are ugly as hell, and I expected it to be a bigger phone from what I had read. Forgetting those things, the phone is great. Flash works perfectly, Im loving have a constant 250mb of ram free. Everything is fasssssssst, it runs Pocket Legends flawlessly (3D game engine). I havent rooted it, but I removed as much of the motorola crap as I could, installed ADW and put a froyo skin on it.

Ah, fair enough. I'm the opposite, phones that are all (or mostly black) just don't do it for me. I had the White/Silver G1, and before that Purple/Black Sidekick Slide and Black/Silver Sidekick 3. I like that the G2 has the combination of the metal and the matte plastic. The main thing that bugs me about the Samsung ones is that the plastic is glossy. I don't like that at all, plus it's a super fingerprint magnet. They are much lighter though, which I concede might be an issue for some people.

Coonie MP size is not important at all. a 5MP camera with a decent lens will take better photos than a 12MP one with a standard lens. Even the Android devices with 8MP+ cameras have standard lenses and therefore the quality of the picture still isn't that great. If photos and videos are a priority for you, wait for something to come out with a Carl Zeiss lens or another well known brand. Some Nokia and HTC Windows phones already have them, so it's only a matter of time.

I don't really see the need to take any serious video with a phone either. None of them have good motion tracking at all, regardless of the MP size. And of course, for video, motion tracking is the most important thing. I got a full HD pocket Kodak Zi8 camcorder for just over $100 and the videos it takes are incredible. It even has a mic input so you can get professional sound as well. That's another thing you're not gonna get on a phone camcorder, decent sound quality. If I don't have my camcorder with me and i REALLY want to capture something, sure I'll take a few video clips, but if you plan on sharing it, the quality will still be that of a phone camcorder, and not a real camcorder. Regardless of whether it is "technically" HD because it has a resolution of 720p or higher, as I said that shit just ain't important.

First image leaks of the LG Optimus 3D? – Android and Me

Our friend Rob Jackson of Phandroid has received an image of what he believes to be the LG Optimus 3D, a device we just learned of last week and one that is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress next month.

The device features a display larger than 4-inches and looks like a combination of LG’s Optimus 2X and Motorola’s Droid X. LG just announced a 4.3 inch WVGA (480×800 pixel resolution) glasses-free 3D display at CES, so that could be the part that gets used in this rumored 3D phone.

Rob’s tipster also revealed that the phone has a dual-core processor, but we do not know which one yet. LG went with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 for the Optimus 2X, but we have already heard that the Optimus 3D is not a Tegra device. It is more likely that the Optimus 3D could feature Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon or Texas Instruments’ OMAP4430.

LG recently teased that their MWC press event would bring us “into the new dimension”, so many believe they are working on 3D devices. Recent comments from company executives have also helped to keep the 3D buzz going.

“With our key understanding of displays, entertainment and mobile technology, LG is looking forward to debuting this exciting new way to watch 3D movies or play games on your mobile phone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “LG sees tremendous growth potential in the 3D mobile display market.”

Whatever happens, I just got a little more excited to attend LG’s press event on February 14th. What do you think they have up their sleeves?
3D displays.....interesting. I wonder if the upcoming Nintendo 3DS will kick start a 3D gaming phase....

lol... I feel you. My G1 was on it's last legs in December hence me deciding to upgrade. That phone lasted a long ass time though.
