To me this really signals the beginning of the end. California can no longer afford to give out welfare and tax refunds.

This will no doubt spread to the other US states too.

Reporting from Sacramento -- State Controller John Chiang announced today that his office would suspend tax refunds, welfare checks, student grants and other payments owed to Californians starting Feb. 1, as a result of the state's cash crisis.

Chiang said he had no choice but to stop making some $3.7 billion in payments in the absence of action by the governor and lawmakers to close the state's nearly $42-billion budget deficit. More than half of those payments are tax refunds.

The controller said the suspended payments could be rolled into IOUs if California still lacked sufficient cash to pay its bills come March or April.

"I take this action with great reluctance," Chiang said at a news conference in his office. But he said that without action to close the deficit, "there is no way to make it through February unscathed."

The payments to be frozen include nearly $2 billion in tax refunds; $300 million in cash grants for needy families and the aged, blind and disabled; and $13 million in grants for college students.

Yup. I did my taxes, and they said the State owed me, and I wouldn't receive it.

Fuck that, How come we were never able to say "I Owe You," on our check b4 the Gov't. took it??

Not necessarily.

California is running an extremely high budget deficit that no other state in the union is close to.

The governor projected that if California didn't receive federal aid, it would run out of cash before March. As the result, the governor has been urging the state to cut costs in every possible way they can. Higher education cuts, mandatory state employee lay-offs, mandatory days off, transportation cuts, infrastructure building halts, you name it.

Although almost every other state in the US is running a budget deficit (maybe excluding Vermont and Utah), each state deals with the matter differently and chooses different actions.

Yah, maybe Arnold should get a pay-cut and help us out.

They didn't want to give me unemployement. BULL SHIT.

CA set the precedent for it, and other states will follow. A lot of states are in a similar situation now.

^I'm no expert on the situation. (Obviously, by my ignorant remarks), but what if companies in every state like, SDG&E, (Gas & Electric companies) where to give free energy out?

They are worth so much and practically have NO competition...would it hurt if they did that?

I understand the low energy thing, but i mean...wouldn't it help?

Their investors would never allow it. It would mean that they would be losing money in the millions if not billions with no revenue.

If all this crap gets out of hand and the US takes a drastic turn for the worse, I'm sure I won't be the only one out there that would like to go out with a bang. Blow things up, kill people, prank call Domino's, and ask for extra semen on my tacos at the Taco Bell drive-thru. It'll be all right.

i hope this clears up in the next 5 years or so cuz i wanna move down to LA when im done my school and paid off my student loans and shit

this country is heading into socialism

Ermmm... you do realize that Socialism is all for welfare right? I mean that is pretty much the point. Welfare, free health care, free education, equal rights for all, a regulated market, etc etc etc.

So please explain how California not having welfare and thus having none of that shows the US heading into socialism to you?
