Google begins Android 4.0 rollout for Nexus S, we scream “FINALLY!”​

It’s been a long wait for impatient Nexus S owners, but today Google has started rolling out the Android 4.0 upgrade for the second-in-line Nexus device.​

Though we don’t know the specifics about the build yet, we do know that the upgrade will take the next month or so to complete, so you may not see it just yet on your Canadian device. Make sure that you’re running a stock build of Gingerbread to get the upgrade the go to Settings –> About Phone –> Software Update to see if yours is ready for tasting.​

The processor in that doesn't quite match up to the Exynos but it closes the gap a little bit by being clocked higher. Plus, bigger screen and NFC, so I say go for it.

Anyway I just performed complex fucking surgery on my SGS2. The EFS files got corrupted at some point earlier today, been trawling XDA for hours for a fix and finally managed to sort it. Basically if your EFS files get corrupted it won't even recognise that there's a SIM in the device.

Shit was touch and go for a while, if you can't restore EFS files from a backup you can literally only fix it by sending it back to Samsung. I tried wiping the ROM before I found the fix, so now I gotta restore my apps and data, but so relieved.

It has the goofy processor because of 4G, right? Not sure on the technicalities but 4G radios were the reason they had to use a different processor?

Don't know, I've been testing out new kernels and ROMs. Battery died at around 7.30 last night, when I got home, no SIM recognised. Reboots and a wipe didn't fix it. I was mad as hell. So started looking around XDA and discovered it's to do with the EFS files. Some of the fixes there didn't work for me, but i finally found one that did.

So I'm still debating whether to buy an unlocked phone now or wait until I can get back on a US carrier to get one on contract. Part of me simply wants a new phone to play games on and make calls to friends while I'm still on the island. But another part of me is hesitant because of what happened to my Droid because of condensation. I'm still unsure if it's the scratch that fucked it up or the condensation.

I sure as hell wouldn't let the new one get scratched (by leaving in my backpack with keys and free-floating coins) but if it's the condensation issue, then my room will remain really cold with the AC on and it will get condensation because it's 85+F outside my apartment all the time. So I'm a bit paranoid. Is there a test I can run on my Droid to see if the touch screen is fucked because of water or a scratch? The water damage indicator has not been triggered.

Yes and yes.

But that's why the Nexus S is $329 and the GS2 is $549.

The SGS2 is still the most premium phone around, along with the GNex. Even more impressive when you remember that it's been available since May. (although it didn't hit the US till Oct). Other manufacturers are still struggling to keep up with Samsung. If it's within your range, then go for it.

Yeah, Galaxy S2 is still a great purchase. In the nearest future other manufacturers are only going to launch devices catching up with the Galaxy S2 but its popularity is what matters. Same with the first galaxy S - it was popular and it was a good, complete phone and it's still up to date and it's still getting updates and huge amounts of custom roms. You can't say that about most other phones from Samsung's competition that were released later that year, even if they packed similar hardware.
I believe that a similar thing is happening with the Galaxy S2 now. Worthy alternatives might start coming out Q1/Q2 2012 but a product that would be as good/successful as the Galaxy S2 might not come out until at least summer 2012.

I may do that then. I'm still debating the need/use of a smartphone here. I have been living with a shit Nokia for three months. But with GrooveIP and GVoice, I am able to call everyone in the States for free, including my family and friends. And for some reason, today, my calling from GMail abilities aren't working. My chat doesn't even show up, let alone the option to call home. I have to find an email from the contact and then call from there. And even then, the phone keeps ringing. No voice mail. Weird.

But unlimited EDGE here is $15 a month. Not sure how much I would use the data while on the go. I got WiFi in my room and in the study hall. That's where I spend most of my time outside of school. I dunno. I'm still on the fence. The Nexus S seems somewhat justifiable because of the price, but the GS2...I won't be able to use it in the States until this time next year. Just when I'm home for a month or so in between breaks. So April, August of 2012.

Still think it's worth a $500+ purchase over a $329? Or is the $329 even too much for a phone I'll be using...well...probably as much as I used back at home, if I get data. I dunno.

No worries. Let us know your initial thoughts on ICS compared to Gingerbread. I've checked out my cousins GNex for 5-10 minutes but interested to know how ICS runs on the NS.
