Canada?

So, a while ago I made a thread about Wales and I (with your great help) decided that it's a shithole and I'm not going there. I thought about Hawaii. Well, I was busy with my Eurotrip and found out that it's probably a bit too late to organize everything, starting from the piece of shit Visa (yes, it's still required in Poland) to accommodation and credit card without which I've heard there's no life in America. Also last minute flights to Hawaii are expensive as hell, with 3 transfers of 30 hours in total.

Since I wanted to go to North America this summer anyway I though about Canada. No visas for us (yay), I always wanted to visit it too and it seems cheaper. Oh, and they filmed McGyver over there, since it had some spectacular landscapes (at least in the 80s) I though that heck, that's an awesome idea.

I did some research, checked plane ticket prices and asked people ("so hey, wanna go to Canada for like a month next week?", which unfortunately didn't work all too well) and I still think that it's a good idea.

I'm thinking about Toronto because of flights (Air france for just over 700$, pretty short flight), because it looks interesting and weather in September doesn't seem to suck all that much there because its further south. Since I'd go there all alone I've found an English school to meet up with some foreigners to explore some forests, mountains, Niagara falls or whatever together.
I just can't seem to find relatively cheap and nice accommodation for a month other than creepy hostels and 'familystays' since I think I'd rather avoid risking my life with a totally random family.

Good idea?

Go stay with FlipMo in Montreal, let that be your home base. Then, take trips to Toronto, Quebec, Niagara Falls, New York, Boston, etc and stay in hostels. Hostels aren't creepy, they're awesome.

Well, the main reason for me going to Canada instead of America is that I don't have the US Visa and I'm afraid I won't get it in time.
Also, those travels look expensive, no? Huge distances. Oh and they speak French in Montreal.

oh, right. forgot about that part. I think you will get it in time. It doesn't take more than a month if you're Serbian and Serbia's not even in the EU.

And no, the distances aren't huge at all. Like, around 600km one way at most if you plan it right. That's pussy shit.

On a serious note, we speak English here as well in Montreal (for the most part, some exceptions with certain assholes who refuse to do so). It's the rest of Quebec that is more French. With the number of immigrants in this city, being trilingual is pretty much the usual. Nobody in Canada likes Toronto, because well, it's Toronto. Montreal is known as sin-city of the North and most people come here to party. That being said, you're looking for a warmer city and it's your first time in Canada, so Toronto or Vancouver will do. Oh, Hostels are fine - they're quite fun even. Ask Hizzle he's been to a few of them I believe.

Well, it's 1st of August already and I planned to be there by 20-ish of August already. I'll call the embassy tomorrow though.
Anyway I wouldn't start booking everything until I was sure to get the Visa, and that could be pretty much late.

I assumed that longer travels are pretty expensive out there.

Seriously though, Toronto should be fine. I grew up going going there for at least 3 months out of the year. I personally prefer Montreal, but for someone just coming to the country for a visit, you should be alright.

So it's a nice city to visit? I mean, I'm not looking to party all the time, I'd rather see the city, surrounding places and hope that there are enough nice things to see and people to meet.

Montreal is a nicer city, but that's only because we have a large European influence. So parts of Montreal will have the same surroundings as, say - Paris. Many people in Canada will say Toronto is just another 'American city' ... like I said, lots of people don't like Toronto. In my case, it's a rival city, so I have to trash talk it any chance I get.

On the real though, there are some things worth seeing there, it's not an ugly city persay, but there are nicer. People are fine as well, and you'll meet people easily. I think there's a strong Polish population in Toronto as well, so you'll prob bump into a few. You're also not too far from Niagara falls and other things.

This can give you a general idea about the city. Like I said, you're there for a month, you'll enjoy it.

@ Flipmo - thanks for the tips, kind Sir. Other than Montreal are there any other nice and warm English-speaking (majorly) cities in Canada worth staying at? I Googled a lot and for any decent landscapes I'd have to travel at least 1,5 hour from Toronto from what I see.

I spent quite a lot of time Googling Canada today. Toronto looks fine but I have to say that I like what I see about Vancouver too. The sceneries look great, it looks like a nicer/calmer city and it's on west coast so despite being more up north it shouldn't get all that cold in September and it should be a bit less rainy than Toronto. And I like the fact that it doesn't seem as busy, and I'd probably have more traveling do on the weekends. The only downside is that the plane tickets are slightly more expensive, and it's closer to Sofi.
What do you guys think of Vancouver?
Right now I'm thinking that going to Vancouver and then to Toronto for a week or so before leaving Canada might be a great idea. Going back home I'd have a transfer in Toronto anyway.

Vancouver is a very nice city. Only drag is that it rains often, and it's maybe the most expensive city to live in Canada (correct me if I'm wrong on that). Else from that, great city - I'd move there in a heart beat.
