American pastor Terry Jones vows to hold national Koran burning event | News.com.au

The pastor of a small Florida church has promised to hold a Koran burning in defiance of a top US commander who warned his actions will spark violent reactions in the Islamic world.

Terry Jones said he had given "serious" consideration to the concerns expressed by US commander General David Petraeus over plans to torch the Koran, but remained adamant the event would proceed anyway.

Pastor Jones, who heads the Dove World Outreach Centre in the town of Gainesville, said the burning would take place to mark the September 11 terror attacks and would send a message to Muslim extremists.

"We are taking the general's words very serious," he said before noting he had "firmly made up his mind" to go ahead with burning the Muslim holy book.

"I mean, how long, when does America stand for truth?" he asked..

If 50 people burn 50 Korans in the woods, no one cares and no one knows. If 50 people burn 50 Korans with 50 cameras on them, people might just notice it.

So why the hell is the press giving credence to this outermost fringe of human life? Why record the burning in the first place?

Maybe some day you will realize your Bad Mistake of being an Atheist and start praising the one and only - Allah.

One day, Jokerman shall praise thy Lord ... and unicorns, the kind that farts glitter and shits diamonds, the big ones that are conflict free.

This has been getting heavy press. The media, in their thirst for ratings, is just amplifying the chances of serious backlash if this event goes down. From what I understand, the pastor did not get a license from the city to start a fire.

I tend to agree. Slow news week or what? But at the same time, when David Petraeus goes out of his way to ask you not to do this, to say that his guys might get hurt because of it, I think then that it might be time to slow down your stupid bullshit.

It's so frustrating living in America at the moment. I guess it always has been but it just seems worse now.

Florida pastor calls off burning of Qurans - CNN.com

Obama called the plan by Jones to burn the Qurans a "recruitment bonanza for al Qaeda."

A recruitment bonanza for al-Qaeda? Kind of like opposition to the mere building of a community center in New York? I'm sure the Muslim world will have the same reaction to both examples of religious intolerance in the U.S.

And while the Florida pastor is a marginal figure, those opposed to the community center are not, if you're gonna go by polls. It is shameful that so many people are willing to flout the constitution in favor of their personal biases.

Protesting a community center when there's a good reason to protest it is nothing to Muslims compared to burning a Quran on purpose. But you're right. The "Muslim world" (where is this planet?) will probably have the same reaction because they have the same reaction to everything.

It's amazing the proportions this event has taken.

One narrow minded pastor + 50 people of a small community + some boards = national crisis.

narrow minded is not enough. That's straight up stupid. I mean, who had the idea of a book buring event in first place....in history. Think about it and then think twice if you want to do it.

Well, when General Petraeus got involved, that made it a national issue for the press.

The "in" thing in America right now is to hate the GLBT community, Muslims, and Mexicans... and all three if you're feeling really patriotic. I guess it's like an initiation into the country? The Irish, Italians, Japanese, Americans of the African Dynasty, Women, etc, etc.. have all gone through their respective phases of hate and/or mistreatment. YOUR TURN!

Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, Bigots, Racists and the unintelligent will all have their fun being douches for the next few years. And then they'll give out somewhat equal rights to the mistreated peeps who despite these rights will continue to not be accurately portrayed in the news and misrepresented in the corporate world and film/media but they will be able to proudly call themselves American. And you know what.. maybe that's all that matters.
