True, law has it that BP will only be accountable up to like $65 million of the costs or something like that. After that they don't have any further accountability. Which means they can be more lax with their process and procedures because they won't be responsible for the full amount of the clean-up costs..
^I'm not sure but I think they are still responsible for the full amount of clean-up costs. I think the figure, which is $75 million, deals with economic damages to those who are affected by the spill. So, I think if it takes like a billion dollars to clean up the spill fully, they have to bear that cost.
You're right, BP's liability is $75 million, and Transocean's liability is $65 million, for damages. But they will have to pay for the total amount of the clean-up.

British Petroleum's CEO, Tony Hayward, said in The Guardian that the spill is relatively tiny compared to the Gulf of Mexico. The greatest oil spill in the history of oil spills and he's comparing it to the "very big ocean."

Why is Obama getting so much hate for this? I understand people think he should be doing more....but I don't think they understand. Obama said the government has been overseeing this since day one, which is fine, but they aren't the ones doing the actual work. BP is doing all the work because it is their accident and it's their expertise(jokes, right? lol) that will fix it. What does the federal government know about offshore drilling? What the government is doing is helping in the cleanup and figuring out a way to stop the oil spread, understandable since they actually have the ability to do that. Hindsight is 20/20...could you imagine if Obama told BP to stop what they're doing immediately so our government can go throw some engineers around to try to outsmart some of the brightest minds in the petroleum industry? It's funny because most of the people, Republicans, that I know that are putting so much blame on Obama are also the ones telling me we need to stop government spending and big government isn't the answer etc. But then this happens and they look to the government for answers, that's understandable because it is a huge disaster but the truth of the matter is this is fucked up and the government has no idea what to do about it, that's why they're overseers. Obama even said, "BP has superior technology to shut the hole compared to the federal government," so why are people mad at him? Why are people going to get mad at him when there will be legislation introduced to try to prevent this thing from happening again, you know the whole big government isn't the answer argument. Putting blame at our or even being mad at Obama is hypocritical to me in a way, that is if you see this issue like most Barry haters do. I'm sure some of you will eloquently explain to me other reasons which is cool but the whole "do something Barry do something" thing is annoying.
One thing I'm uneasy about is Barry going to San Fran to help Barbara Boxer make some money, you want to hate on the dude for that then by all means.

Yeah, one can't blame Obama or the government for the cleanup, but we can hold them accountable (the gubmint in general) for being lax with regulations that helped create this oil spill. Blowout preventors are NOT mandatory in the US, as opposed to Norwegian and Brazilian law which requires them to be installed and remotely operated (acoustic sensor) in case of a real emergency. US investigated the possibility of it but concluded it wasn't worth the money or some bullshit like that.

BP is about profits. They dont want to fix the leak. If they seal it off now they wont get access to the wells in the future. Instead what they are doing is making "relief" wells, which wont be ready until mother fucking AUGUST and will supply them with oil. If the leak gets blocked off now, no one gets the oil because Obama wont let them drill there anymore, so they wont block it off, they'd rather wait and tap it in the name of "relief."
Obama should have declared it an national emergency and sent someone from the US government to oversea the situation. They need to plug this hole NOW before it is too late and they kill everything in the ocean. Not to mention the fact Hurrican season is going to rain this all over the country. Imagine if it all sparks? Welcome to hell Florida!

And how exactly is BP gaining from this worldwide bad publicity event, that will cost the company time, effort, a lot of goodwill and millions upon millions of dollars?
Also, Aron is right. What CAN the US government do? They don't have the necessary equipment or know-how for this. They ARE overseeing.
You are right, from that perspective the US government is to blame. However, was Obama the president at that time? I'm asking because if he was, shame on him. If he wasn't, sure shame on him for not revisiting those laws but at the same he has so much going on. Presidents aren't gods, only mere humans who can only handle so much.
The US don't want to spend the $ sealing it. They want BP to fix it and pay for it. The thing is, by doing that you are allowing BP to take the time to do that, whether they really do need that time or not.
I don't like how you think let's get the US military to fix it and that's it. That's how the US has thought for years and look at the chaos they have created each time in other countries. The US government would require time to get an expertise on that matter, then choose some action to fix it. That takes a lot of time and $, that same time and money they'd rather have BP pay for.
The US military needs to go in there, shoot a bunch of people and then occupy the Gulf of Mexico and Florida until BP kills the one thousandth US soldier 3 years later.
But seriously people, this is not Obama's Katrina. Who's blaming him anyway? Sarah Palin and her moronic ilk, and their no-nothing followers in the public. As soon as the extent of this disaster was known, Obama sent an armada of homeland security, Environmental Protection Agency, FEMA and Coast Guard personnel, engineers, scientists, Britney Spears, Prince, the Incredible Hulk, God, technicians and clean-up workers to the Gulf; more than 20,000 responders in all. He also asked Congress for $130 million for clean-up operations. He is blameless here. The only criticism I might have for him is that he needs to hate on BP more than he has. But that's not his style in any area, as we've seen with the greedy banks.
They already have the bad publicity, now they can have bad publicity and no oil, or bad publicity and the oil through relief wells in August. They are going with the latter.
Like I said, they can do what the Russians have done in the past when this happened to them. Send in the military with a low yield nuke, drop it down the hole and detonate it underground melting the rock and sealing it from the inside. So... It looks like they DO have the necessary equipment AND know how for this.
BP is a British company. So hating on them is very American and patriotic, I might add.
