an android powered HTC Dream, and it fucking rocks.

Still getting around it cause I'm not used to these kinds of phones, but up to date... it's a monster.

Rogers (my mobile provider) had a contest where they give hints and a secret message you have to say to a Rep, and it's in any city in Canada. Yesterday, it was here in Montreal, and I won it. First time I win something this big. I ran in the middle of the street yelling like we just beat England at the World Cup Qualifiers.

Casey is gonna like this part; the other 3 people that showed up late and got a gift certificate, but they were upset cause they didn't want their IPhone anymore... lol

Are there any awesome apps I should get above others?

I posted a list in there. It needs updating but it still should be helpful.

Really though you should root it, if you want to use it to it's full potential. But take a few days to familiarise yourself with the interface and how everything works before you do that and let me know when you are ready to turn to the dark side

The rooting procedure for Rogers devices is a little different to T-Mobile ones, but I can help you through it

Edit: Rooting the HTC... that's the same concept as jail-breaking an Iphone correct?

More or less, yeah.

The three main reasons to root:

1. Install new, customised, optimised OS from the development community that contain the latest bug fixes, better memory management, are speedy as hell, and have features that won't be officially pushed to the stock OS for a while. The best ROM is Cyanogen's, who has already incorporated most of Android 1.6 into his ROM.....stock Dream/G1 runs 1.5.

2. Apps2SD - unfortunately the main design flaw of the Dream was an unsatisfactory amount of internal storage - you can solve this problem by partitioning your sdcard and the custom ROM will then move the apps to the sdcard partition.

3. Overclocking - for some reason the stock OS underclocks the processor, running it at about 400mHZ instead of it's ability to run at 528mHZ. Once you have root access you can solve this by getting an Overclocker app from the market.

I loved my G1 before I rooted it......but now it is like an unstoppable warrior machine.

Interesting. I'll be looking into this in the next few days once I get used to the stock OS.

rooting seemed very confusing at first because of all the backing up i needed to do. i didnt know what order to do things as im only 2-3 months new to android and the whole system.

but its unbelievably easy to do. (that's rooting and partitioning the SD card).

I read that since I'm using the Canadian HTC Dream/G1 ... it's a bit of a different process, but the process is available online now. I'll be working on that this week.

It's a great phone. I've used an Iphone and now using this. I can honestly say, I have more fun using this than I did the Iphone. That's just personal preference though.

I love how that was a statement and not a question. But yeah, I will. When you're actually doing it, it's easier than it seems like it would be from reading about it. I've actually rooted phones over Skype recently, so that goes to show how simple it actually is.
