Dont really know what all of this means but it sounds impressive.

Here are the specs for Xbox 2's (code name Xenon) graphics processor:

24 "Pipelines"
32 Texture Units
96 Arithmetic Logic Units (ALU)
192 Shader Operations per Cycle
700MHz Core
134.4 Billion Shader Operations per Second (at 700MHz)
256-bit 512MB 1.8GHz GDDR3 Memory
57.6 GB/sec Bandwidth (at 1.8GHz)
300-350 Million Transistors
90nm Manufacturing
Shader Model 3.0
ATI HyperMemory
ATI Multi Rendering Technology (AMR)
Launch: Q2 2005
Performance: Over 3x Radeon X800 XT !!! (for single R520)
16x stochastic FSAA
FP32 blending, texturing
Programmable Primitive Processor/Tesselator

Here's details from the block diagram we saw months ago:

--Xenon's R520 variant will use SM 3.0
--It will have 48 ALU's
--It will do 96 shader operations per clock cycle
--Peak performance is 48 billion shader operations per second

^^^^aa for real? Fuck then I'm gonna wait and get Xbox 2 instead of Xbox.

btw; will I be able to play Xbox games on Xbox 2? I mean kind of like in PS where you can play old PS games.

They may install an emulator but I wouldnt hold my breath.
Same for PS3, you probably wont be able to play PS2 or 1 games on there either.

The ATI whice wil be in the Xbox2 is not a R520 but a R500, that is comfirmed.

So its not for the xbox2, the xbox contains R400 and R500 is ATI next series.

Oh well its very close. Regardless ATI said non of their PC chips will be able to match the Xbox chip for at least 2 years.

dude on gamer tv yesterday said the ps3 wil be fully backwards compatible and will be on show at the e3 in may and they also showed the cell processor and said that it would reach over 4.5 ghz

You know what i dont get, if the Chip is that advanced, why hold it back, why not release it for the PC?
Why hold back technology?

Quite simple, they arent holding it back man. When they release a chip for the PC, they have to make sure it works for various programming languages, various hardware configurations, various processers, motherboards, etc etc, under various speeds, etc etc. All that takes time.

For the Xbox 2, they dont have to worry about that, all that is constant, so they can push a chips hardware because they always know what conditions it will be working under. Its easier for them to make.

The chip in 2 years time, technology wise, will be superious because it can work accross the board, but it will run as fast as the X2 GPU.

its all rumours man, from fan boards, id wait for the official word

Thats the official word from ATI, not a rumor from a fan board.

I doubt it, and if Sony does it i predict that will be the down fall of the PS3.

It was easy to do it on PS2 because the PS2 used the same basic hardware as the PS1, same IO signals and all of that, so it was easy to do. The PS3 is totally different hardware, it'll be harder to do and may not be possible at all, so I dont think they will do it. If they do I think it will be at the expense of PS3 performance.
