ok, this is like the second time i try to install service pack 2 for xp home edition. both times have been unsuccessful because of one small annoying thing. every time i try to right-click a shortcut on my desktop or quicklaunch i get a dr. watson error. it says "Program Error: explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program." here's what the dr. watson log said for the error: Click here for log

o yeh, also, I never encountered this error in service pack 1 or prior

thanks for your time and help in advance :)

yeh, thats what came to my mind at first to do too. didn't work how i disabled dr. watson first and it didnt work this time either :( . without dr. watson this error comes up: explorer.exe - Application Error: The instruction at "0x0228415b" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". Thanks for trying though ..repped :thumb:

ive looked round and it seems theres no fix...which shouldnt be case case...ill look round somemore.

will they turn me away since my computer is from Dell? thats what microsoft did when i tried to send an email through their support website. they said that dell tech support could probably help me but i'm sure Dell will charge to help me.

i work for microsoft, i know what the problem is...call:
1 800 668 7975

FYI - its a registry problem.

fuckin tell him then

theres a million steps...

call MS and tell them that you spoke to like a million ppl...thats when they'll help u for free. and sound mad but sincere when u do it

trust me

Found this AFTER removing sp2 and attempting to go to sp1 :( ...got stuck in between both sp's for a long time and was screwed...finally got around it (FYI Cryptographic services are a BITCH). reinstalled sp1, then reinstalled sp2, finally uninstalled dr. divx completely (PELLA hinted at a registry fix which is mentioned in aforementioned link) and was fine.

I wouldve called microsoft, but it was too late. I had already removed sp2 and had got other problems. Then I found the answer to my SP2 problem...don't know how the hell i found it.

I'm so glad my computer is normal now :D

thanx for the help everyone!
