I was reading the depression thread and it just that seems a lot of people have a bit of knowledge. I was wondering how many people actually study it as a subject.

I know a bit because I suffered from some kind of anxiety (don't know how it's called in English) and depression.
I think Jokerman is the boss here if it comes to medicine :thumb:

A knowledge of Psychology is essential if you wish to understand the human condition.

I, myself, and I, have never taken the study to an academic level. An education that extensive on this subject would only be worth the time if you were initiating in a career in counselling, criminal psychology, or mental health; or of the likes etc.

I read books on various subjects, as a hobby. To increase awareness and basic knowledge/understanding. That is the highest I have taken my interest in psychology to. I have read one book about psychology. For me that outlined the basic principles of the subject, and taught me that people do/say things for different reasons.

A close family member told me that psychologists don't trust people, that they are naturally sceptical about other people and their motives. I believe that statement.

I personally find philosophy a lot more interesting subject. For psychology is a kind of philosophy. A philosophy of the workings of the mind.

Psychology is cool. I took psy. 101 last summer, but besides that im not studying, its just for a GE requirement to transfer to a University. Most things were a waste of time b/c I believe it had a lot of common knowledge, however i am very observing of a lot of things, so to me it was simple.

Some things put things into a better perspective then what i originally thought and because of it it helps me understand the way some people work.

It also helps understand why some things have happened in History, imo.

i had to take psychology as a core class.. most majors require you to take it so.. yeah i remember the cool stuff, not the details on certain phenomena...

im going to study psychology this september at university, only thing is i havent actually studied it as a proper subject.

However, i have taken psycholgy units as part of AS Level Sports Science and as part of my other sports course im currently studying. Really enjoyed it.

I'd like to at some point, I finished my Multimedia & Networks degree last year. I'm thinking of going back to uni in September for another course, I wanted to do web design but I'll see what happens...

I have read a couple of books, nothing that gives a whole lot of knowledge really. Other than that I've read various published and unpublished articles. Wikipedia, as well as other private sites like www.socialphobia.com and so forth.

I seemed to assume the role of the consultant in my ground of friends. A lot of people have confided in me over the years for emotional guidance. A lot of what I consider my "knowledge" of psychology is simply dots I have connected from experiences I have had. For example, you don't need to read a book to learn that if a human is allowed to "grow wild", it will in every case become extremely greedy and self-centered.

Yeah, most of introductory psychology doesn't bring anything new to the table to those who are considered socially conscious, it just puts certain thoughts and ideas that you already have into words and phrases and into a better perspective.

When I took a social psych class, I was constantly thinking "Wait, I realized this, I just never knew it had a name" shit like that.
