A Shanghai online game player who stabbed a competitor to death for selling his cyber-sword has been given a suspended death sentence, which in effect means life imprisonment, state media said on Wednesday.

The case had created a dilemma in China where no law exists for the ownership of virtual weapons.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, stabbed competitor Zhu Caoyuan in the chest after he was told Zhu had sold his "dragon sabre," used in the popular online game, "Legend of Mir 3," the China Daily said.

"Legend of Mir 3" features heroes and villains, sorcerers and warriors, many of whom wield enormous swords.

Qiu was sentenced to death "with a two-year reprieve," which in effect means life behind bars. That, in turn, could be reduced to 15 years if he behaves well, the newspaper said of the sentence which has angered the victim's family.

"My son was only 26 when he died," said Zhu Huimin, the dead man's father, who is planning to appeal. "He was sleeping when Qiu broke into his home. He was barely able to put on his pants before Qiu stabbed him.

"We want Qiu to die, and immediately."

Qiu and a friend jointly won their weapon last February, and lent it to Zhu who then sold it for 7,200 yuan (US$870), the newspaper said.

Qui went to the police to report the "theft" but was told the weapon was not real property protected by law.

"Zhu promised to hand over the cash but an angry Qui lost patience and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him in the left chest with great force and killing him," the court was told.

More and more online gamers were seeking justice through the courts over stolen weapons and credits, the newspaper said at the time the case went to trial.

"The armor and swords in games should be deemed as private property as players have to spend money and time for them," Wang Zongyu, an associate law professor at Beijing's Renmin University of China, was quoted as saying.

But other experts have called for caution. "The 'assets' of one player could mean nothing to others as they are by nature just data created by game providers," a lawyer for a Shanghai-based Internet game company was quoted as saying.

say what you will but i sort of agree with this. surely, stabbing the dude was taking it a step too far, but while some people cherish their stamp collection, others find peace in their character in an online game. just because some people find the latter geeky and the former not doesn't make the latter less important for whoever it applies to. i would fucking stab someone if they sold my tupac shit lol.

am i the only one who thinks this is the most fucked up part with the whole story? i swear whenever i see some dead boys parents saying they want to see their son's killer(s) dead, i feel like twisting their fucking neck. who the fuck would say such a thing? bah i'm not messing around, i'd be glad to go to jail for a couple of years just to kick that kind of people's ass so bad they'd need a metal plate put in their head. i'm not joking lol.

just another fuckin sad day in history. two grown ass men acting like children where one of them gets killed while the other goes to jail for life. is life really not worth that much anymore?

then you are no better than the killer and the killer's mother would want to see you dead and then your mother would want to see the person who you killed's mother dead and you have a vicious cycle lol. do you seriously think it is right that someone kill people who killed someone themselves? doesn't that make everyone a damn killer?

i never said you wouldn't, that's not the point. the point is that aren't you as twisted as the killer if you wish him dead? doesn't killing him make you a killer as well? and do you deserve to live if you're a killer, seeing as you believe another killer doesn't? that's the point.

No it wouldn't, imo.

The thing that makes the dude 'twisted' in the first place is because he killed a dude over a game......

you can't define importance. for me, it's important to be able to produce and to go to tupacboard because it makes me feel relaxed. it's a break from reality, and i need it to carry on. for this other person, it was his game. granted, i wouldn't kill someone for deleting my tupacboard account lol. but you get what i mean. yeah it's twisted and he shouldn't kill anybody, of course. but anyone who wish death upon others fall in the same category. instead of taking the highground, the parents stooped down to a lower level and appeared as murderous lunatics. "i want him dead, immediately". who the fuck say such a thing?

Doing some underhanded game shit: don't deserve to die.

Killing my child: deserve to die.

That's how I see it, plain & simple.
