We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions

If you haven't heard, it's an album of folk songs that Pete Seeger has performed (but not written). I'm digging the hell out of it. There's some very serious subject matter, but Springsteen makes it sound lively, fuck, jubilant. It's a great contrast to Devils and Dust (which I liked). The album has a very raw feel - he didn't use any musicians he'd played with before (besides his wife), and the album was recorded without rehearsals. It sounds great, though.

Here's "O Mary Don't You Weep", my favorite performance on the album by far. The organs and the gospel chorus are fantastic.

Between this, Neko Case's album, the new Drive-By Truckers, and the Loose Fur album, 2006 has been great for Americana. I can't wait for the new Neil Young.
