Hey,

My friend and I have free time and are looking to start kind a social interaction website. Similar to a mix of this set up with a craigslist vibe. Local things mostly. Anyways, I'm pretty efficient with html coding, boyfriend does graphic design and I have access to many adobe programs... illustrator, dreamweaver, photoshop, etc.

But anyone who can point me in the right direction. I have a general idea but I'd like more specific advise.

Like what site to buy a domain name from?
How much bandwith would I need to start out with?
How do I get other sites to pay me for being allowed to place ads on the site?

That kind of stuff.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Syn

I'd like to help you but I forgot a lot of the stuff I used to know about HTML and other website coding.

However, I do know that there are already too many social networking sites on the internet these days. You should maybe try to do something more innovative or if you still want to do a social networking, make it innovative and different than what websites like Facebook can do.

All my domains are from one.com

Quite a good deal, all the features and bandwidth you should need. I wouldn't worry about bandwidth to start with, anything that you get will be more than enough just for hosting a site...if the site blows up you can always buy more with your millions of dollars :D

As for ads, the google route Jeremy posted is the easiest, but don't expect to get rich off ads :):thumb:

If you need any help with coding or scripts etc, pm me.

get your domains and hosting through nativespace.com

Its not social networking. teenagers and facebook and myspace annoy me and insult my brain :(

Its going to be all local stuff. Just a "kick-it"/ meet up guide so to speak. Chicago has tons of fairs, festivals, art shows, plays, etc and most are free but no one knows about them until last minute as there's no one place to get the information conveniently. we want to cover all of that and a bit more as I have a few friends who plan and throw parties and such.

Oh okay that's cool actually

You can start with the smallest or mid-smallest plan and then move your site to a bigger server or buy a better plan but you definately won't need it at the start - it would just be a waste of money.
Before buying it check basic stuff like ping and such for user comfort.
