Female duo may be on crime spree, police say
Unusual pair thought to be responsible for robbery attempt, separate van theft

A female duo who tried to rob a man at gunpoint Sunday morning after one flashed him may be the same two women who later chatted with another man at a nearby convenience store and then possibly drove away in his car, police said.
Investigators working the cases are wondering whether another five or six unsolved auto thefts and robberies might be the handiwork of two women, a rare case in law enforcement.
Sgt. Robert Ruiz of the East Side divisional gang unit has been involved in such investigations for more than 10 years. He said he does not remember the last time he came across a pair of female partners in crime.
"In most crimes committed by females, the females are usually with a male suspect. It's not so much just two females ... like in that movie, Thelma and Louise."
Police think two women threatened and tried to rob a resident of the Berry Creek Condos in the 4700 block of Allendale at 6:55 a.m, as the 55-year-old man was leaving for work.
The man told police one woman suddenly flashed him then smashed a window of his pickup with a hammer as he was getting in.
The police said that when he got out of the truck and grabbed the hammer, another woman stepped out of a small beige car and, sporting a semiautomatic weapon, demanded his wallet.
The man ran away from the women and they did not try to steal his car, police said.
About 35 minutes later, two women in a car struck up a conversation with a man who parked his van at a convenience store in the 1910 block of Broadway.
They chatted for about five minutes, the 29-year-old man later told police.
The women said they were hungry, so he offered to go into the store and buy them something, leaving his keys in the ignition.
His van was gone by the time he walked out. And so were the women.
Both men described the women as Hispanic and, between 17 and 22 and 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 5 inches tall.
