ABC News: US Airways Jet Crashes into Hudson River

Some 150 people aboard a US Airways plane en route to Charlotte, N.C., from New York City were rescued today in a lightning-fast effort following the jet's crash into the frigid waters of the Hudson River off the West Side of Manhattan.
Many survivors were exposed to the frigid water of the Hudson River.

US Airways flight 1549, an A-320 manufactured by Airbus, went down in the near-freezing waters shortly after the pilot reported two bird strikes.

In the aftermath of the crash, the pilot, Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III, was praised for his efforts at landing the plane softly on the river's surface, allowing rescue crews to get to the passengers before the plane sank.

"It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river, and then making sure everybody got out," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference late today.

The mayor said Sullenberger "walked the plane twice to verify if anyone was onboard" before exiting himself.

Thank God, all 155 passengers escaped and no one was hurt.

Thats what I suspected.. Fuckin birds.. I always wondered what might happen if a Pelican got sucked into a passenger plane, like a boeing.. they don't look like they can easily get out the way at our airport there are heaps of em at the end of the runway. hmmmm..

There are some flight recorder clips available on YouTube... talk about drama. Japan Airlines 123 of 1985, the deadliest crash in history. Shortly before the plane crashes into the mountain side, you hear the pilot screaming "pull up! pull up!" and the co-pilot saying "I'm pulling!" then you hear what sounds to be the plane hitting tall trees.

I salute the pilots of 1549.

The Union of Birds went on strike twice. People don't realize that birds are what make a plane fly. It's like a ship with many slaves rowing. On a plane, there's a compartment where many birds are flapping their wings and this gets the plane flying.

Ah, no. What two bird strikes mean is that both engines were hit by birds. They ran into a flock. If all it took was one bird getting sucked into an engine to ruin it, almost every jet that flew would crash because all flights suck in a bird or so.

More videos of the crash is coming out now , and I must say, the response time was fairly quick. The first boat was at the scene no more than 2 minutes after the crash. Although the first at the scene weren't professional rescuers, I must salute the rescue personnel who go out and risk their lives for the safety of others.
