Can someone tell me why most universities require foreign languages , and some give you extra credits for having them. I was just looking at how the university unloaded my highschool scores and the french course i took seems to be listed , got an E , but they still gave me considerable amount of credits.

They do it because it's College. College isn't for everyone and if you go the extra mile to try and obtain new knowledge then they will most likely reward you. You are going out of your way to try and learn a new language which is hard as hell to do. Plus Companies want workers that speak multiple languages.

most state and higher-end universities will require 4 semesters of foreign language coursework that increases in difficulty. you can get out of taking these courses if you completed them in high school. additionally, you can get the credit for subsequent courses if you test for skill and complete a course that is more difficult than the last one completed. example - you test past 3rd semester, so you take semester 4 and pass so then you receive credit hours for semesters 1, 2, 3, and 4.

...or you could attend a half rate community college like eric, that doesn't have any admission standards whatsoever.

It's to make a well-rounded, well-versed person, to introduce you to a range of material and experiences that may influence you in the future.

UNC requires through at least three levels. If you place into Spanish 3 and pass, you're done.

That is why the USA are seen as arrogant and not respected in the world these days. It's ignorant to think like that and no look over your borders.
