PC FIRM FACES TROUBLE

The future of Britain's largest computer manufacturer - Granville Technology Group - is in doubt.

The maker of Tiny and Time computers has abruptly closed all 78 of its retail stores and begun laying off staff at its factory.

The Guardian says all the group's directors, except its part-time chairman, have also resigned.

A spokesman told the paper: "Granville Technology's first responsibility is to its staff and customers and we are not making any further comment at this time."

The firm employs 1,100 workers at its factory in Burnley, Lanacashire and produces around 500,000 PCs a year.

At its height, the group had a turnover of £250m and more than 150 high street stores.

Granville, formerly known as Time Group, is owned through offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and Jersey by 34-year-old British businessman Tahir Moshan.

He resigned as managing director last year.
