UEFA Look into racist chants

Uefa have told Liverpool that they have included the racist chanting from a section of CSKA Sofia's crowd in their report of the game.

The Bulgarian side face sanctions after Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse was on the receiving end of monkey chants from the crowd.

"The Uefa official has told our secretary Bryce Morrison that he has heard the monkey noises and he will include that in his report," said Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez expressed his disappointment at the chanting.

"Always it is a pity to hear such things, but the Uefa official has heard and it has gone in his report," said Benitez.

"The atmosphere in terms of support was good in the ground, but the monkey noises are a pity. We must learn and not do it because it is really bad for football.

"The Uefa officials have done the report."

Well, what do the want to do? And as a pro you just gotta live with it somehow. I mean the fans might pick on you - just make them pay on the court/field and they'll shut up

STAR FACES RACE TAUNTS

Liverpool FC striker Djibril Cisse has branded the Bulgarian fans who made racist taunts against him as "stupid".

The chanting started when the French international scored the opening goal in a 3-1 Champions League victory against CSKA Sofia last night.


He told the Liverpool Echo: "It's a shame this happens but there are a lot of stupid people sometimes at these games and, as a player, you can't do anything about it."

He added: "This is the first time anything like this has happened to me in any game.

"I'm a strong enough person to deal with this and I don't let it affect me. I'm just sad we have to talk about these issues rather than the football."

UEFA delegate Trygve Borno is reporting back to his bosses on the chanting and it could result in the Bulgarian team being called before a disciplinary panel.

A statement from the European governing body said: "UEFA is aware that incidents of a racist nature have taken place at the CSKA Sofia-Liverpool match, and is waiting to receive the official delegate's report."

After the match, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez expressed his disbelief at the scenes in Bulgaria.

"There is no place for this," he said. "The most important thing is that the UEFA man has said he will send in a report, he has done his job..."

Benitez added: "It was a pity, because their supporters had done a good job for their team supporting them so well. It was a big mistake to resort to such things.

"If you talk about sport, you must make sure things do not happen like this again.

"It will now go to UEFA and it is stupid to suggest that Djibril provoked the crowd. Was scoring a goal provocation?"

UEFA said a hearing is "probable" and would be scheduled for August 18.
