My source for the thing about O'Neill was Ray Houghton mentioned it on Irish TV the other day while they were discussing the McLaren appoinment.I think the other English pundit(Trevor something-Former England player) said it as well.

Did France win Euro 2004? No. Did Portugal? No. Did Holland? No. Did Italy? No Did Germany No? Eh, shit happens.

The majority of the England team are better players than they were 2 years ago, especially Lampard, Gerrard and Joe Cole. The fact of the matter is we have an excellent chance.

Compare the England squad then to the England squad now:

Paul Robinson is a better keeper than David James.
Rio Ferdinand is a better defender than Sol Campbell
Steven Gerrard is better now that he was then, especially since he'll play in the middle rather than out on the left
Frank Lampard is better now than he was then
Joe Cole is better than he was then (not that he played) and is a much better left winger than Gerrard or Scholes
I'd probably pick Peter Crouch and Theo Walcott over Emile Heskey and Darius Vassell.

The team is stronger overall, which means they should do better without Rooney than the 2004 side did.

Michael Owen isn't a bad striker. What he does, he does well. He's quick, he's got great positional sense, very good finishing and can take it round players. Unfortunately, we don't now have anyone to play alongside him. Hopefully if Joe Cole or Stevie Gerrard gets pushed up to play alongside him they can try to fill the Rooney role.

Owen gets injured too fast and has not proven himself on the highest level for some years. I'd even prefer Crouch over him. Crouch can hold up and get the ball to the midfielders. I think the midfielders (Gerrard, Lampard) gonna have to score for England, not the strikers.

He top scored for England at Euro 2004, in the season after he had the best goals per minute ratio in La Liga and this season has 7 goals in 10 starts, despite being out injured for the majority of the season. The only level he hasn't scored at in the past season is Champs League, which is difficult if he isn't playing.

In portugal in 2004 he scored.....1 time. Amazing striker.

He did just a little better in 2002, when he scored 2 times. Only one can be considered important though, the one against Brazil.
