Last week I purchased a burger and fries at McDonalds for $3.58.

The counter girl took my $4.00 and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies. While looking at the screen on her register, I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the
1950s:

Teaching Math In 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His
cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his
profit?

Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His
cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What
is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His
cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His
cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20 Your
assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is
selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the
habitat of animals or the preservation of our
woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of
$20. What do you think of this way of making a living?
Topic for class participation after answering the
question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

Teaching Math In 2006

Un ranchero vende una carretera de madera para $100. El cuesto de la produccion era $80. Cuantos tortillas se puede comprar?

lol. Yes I completelt understand it's like when you buy something that's $6 bucks and you give them $11 and they literally stand there look at what you gave them, then look at you and give you the $1 back. Come on try and figure it out.

LOL. Due to PC, right?

It's the same way where I work. Some of my cashiers have been there for years and most others have at least graduated high school and still cannot count back. They have to key in the amount given to them in order to know what change to give back and God forbid they key in the wrong amount, then they have no clue what change to give back. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Did you not pass simple first grade math? I mean come the hell on. You do not have to be a genius to take 3.58 from 4.08. My 8 year old daughter can do that in her head.
And it's not just counting back either. It's the same way for them packing orders. Like when they're first hired, you have to sit and explain over and over again how many of each piece of chicken you put in a bucket. Is it not common sense that if you have 4 cuts off the chicken that you put 4 of each piece in a 16 piece bucket? lol It's sad really.

You work in a fast food place or something similar? If so, your post doesn't hold much value now, does it?

I had to be an asshole.

What happened to how math is taught in 2000? It went from 1990 to 2006. That's not fair. You know, once you miss something in math you never catch up. I'm now lost.

Well you suceeded on the asshole part. :D And why does my post not hold any value? Yes, I am a manager at KFC but isn't that what we were talking about in the first place, the fact that simple math confuses some people? Is your comment supposed to mean that everyone that works in a fast food place is illiterate? Cause I graduated high school and I'm a fairly intelligent person that just got stuck in a shitty place of employment because I have a household to support and it pays the bills and then some. Not that I like where I'm working because at the moment I hate it and I'm trying to get outta there but I have to stay there for now because I can't afford to just up and quit when I'm supporting 3 kids and paying bills by myself while not living off of the government and other taxpayers like some people do. K, thanks.

My comment was supposed to mean that while you're complaining about people that cannot do simple math, your job position isn't actually a "college degree needed" type of position. You don't have to reply... I know it was rude and unneccessary, and arguably unfounded. :) I congratulate you on your efforts, though. Maintaining three kids must be tough. I worked at KFC for about 6 months when I was 16. I hated it, too. My manager was pretty successful; my co-workers were saying that she was stacking up to about 100k a year.

i wud have worked it out after a short peice of thinking but my maths is poor, like on saturday ay cooper the addition of 50+70 will not pay 120 from my holiday and leave me £10 to spend! hahahha

SOFI you're an ass, but I like you though because you keep it real. No, my job position doesn't require a college degree but neither does 11 minus 6. If you've even completed the first grade you should be able to subtract simple numbers, that was my complaint. You don't need to be handling money if you can't count.
Damn, your manager was racking up 100K a year? I wish the hell I could make half that lol Our GMs prolly net $600 a week but I don't even make that, they're on salary too though and I'm on an hourly rate. I wouldn't go on salary for nothing in the world cause they don't get paid for their overtime, I do. They have to work at least 45 hrs a week and if they don't make 45, it's broken down to an hourly rate and they don't make their regular salary pay. So I'm satisfied staying on my hourly rate so whatever hours I work, I get paid for.
