A MELBOURNE teacher who had a three-way relationship with two teenage female students was sentenced to seven years in jail in the Victorian County Court today.
Peter Donald Carne, of Hennessey Way, Dandenong was an English and drama teacher when he began a relationship with a 16-year-old student after he started counselling her over her behaviour, the court heard.
After they started their affair, the 45-year-old father of three and the girl became involved in a three-way relationship with another student at the school, then aged 15.
At the time Carne was teaching at a public school in Melbourne's east in 2002.
Carne was given a minimum sentence of five years in prison after pleading guilty to 10 charges including committing an indecent act with a 16-year-old under his supervision or care, three counts of sexual penetration with a 16-year-old under his supervision or care, three counts of sexual penetration with a child under 16 years old, committing an indecent act in the presence of a child under 16 and transmitting and possessing child pornography.
Judge Carolyn Douglas said Carne's conduct undermined the public's confidence in the teaching profession and the trust of his teaching colleagues.
She said Carne was a well-educated man in a position of authority who knew the girls were vulnerable.
She said she had taken into account Carne's remorse and the fact that he would have to live with the embarrassment and the humiliation of his fall from grace.

A MELBOURNE schoolteacher who had a sexual threesome with two underage female students before photographing them giving each other oral sex was sentenced yesterday to seven years' jail.
Peter Donald Carne, an English and drama teacher at a state secondary school in Melbourne's southeast, was sentenced to seven years, with a minimum of five years, after pleading guilty to 10 charges, including sexual penetration of two girls, aged 15 and 16, and transmitting child pornography.
Carne, a 45-year-old father of three, sat stony-faced as County Court judge Carolyn Douglas delivered the sentence.
Judge Douglas said the conduct of Carne - who as Year 10 co-ordinator was responsible for counselling the 16-year-old on behavioural issues - had undermined the public's confidence in the teaching profession and betrayed the trust of his teaching colleagues.
An earlier court appearance heard that in mid-2002, after several months of weekly meetings with the 16-year-old, Carne told her he had "personal feelings" for her and wanted to spend more time with her.
The girl initially had been "taken aback" by his offer, but later consented to a sexual relationship, saying she was "excited by the idea".
Having established a continuing sexual relationship with the girl, Carne suggested her 15-year-old best friend, also a student at the school, join them for a threesome.
The court yesterday heard that Carne picked up the girls in his car near one of their homes in December 2002 and took them to his home, where he kissed the 16-year-old before the second girl joined in.
He had sex with both girls, but later denied knowing the 15-year-old was a virgin.
Over the next six months, the trio engaged in regular sex sessions.
Carne recorded the sessions, which included the two girls giving each other oral sex, on his webcam.
He then sent the footage to various people, including the 15-year-old.
His relationship with the 16-year-old later dissipated when she became tired of the secrecy surrounding their sex sessions.
The 15-year-old stopped seeing Carne shortly after, when he suggested he might drug his new girlfriend's 16-year-old daughter so he could have sex with her.
Carne was arrested in July 2003 when the school principal contacted police after hearing about the relationship from teachers and students.
In sentencing Carne, Judge Douglas said he was a well-educated man in a position of authority who knew that the girls were vulnerable.
She said she took into account his remorse and the fact that he would forever have to live with the embarrassment and humiliation of his fall from grace.
Carne's name will be permanently kept on a sexual offender's register.
