WAUKESHA, Wis. -- A retired trucker who still worked part time died after being attacked by stinging wasps as he worked in his yard, authorities said.

The death of Harold Lueck Jr., 72, of the town of Genesee, raised concerns about the insects.

"This doesn't happen very often, but it is always possible,'' Nancy Healy, public health manager for Waukesha County, said Tuesday.

His wife, Gloria, said he experienced only a minor reaction when a wasp stung him about a month ago.

But then he was attacked by a swarm of wasps Aug. 19 as he prepared to trim tree branches. His 16-year-old grandson saw the attack and alerted his grandmother, who found Lueck slumped in a patio chair, breathing but unconscious. Swelling cut oxygen to his brain.

The couple celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary the day before the fatal attack.

"When I tell people how Hal died, I get this look of disbelief,'' his wife said. "I haven't come to grips with it myself." AP
