A STATUE of kung fu legend Bruce Lee has arrived in Hong Kong, ready for unveiling this week as part of celebrations marking the martial arts star's 65th birthday.
The bronze statue, 2.5 meters high and weighing 600 kilograms, has been erected at the Avenue of Stars by the harborfront in Kowloon, the equivalent of Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
The statue, which has the words "Star of the Century: Bruce Lee" carved on the base, was created by renowned Chinese sculptor Cao Chongen and transported from his workshop in Guangzhou.
"Bruce Lee is a lot of people's hero. We are very happy to see that it's finally completed. All of Lee's Hong Kong fans will now have a place to pay tribute to their idol," Wong Yiu-keung said Wednesday. Wong, the chairman of the Bruce Lee Club, organized the celebrations in cooperation with the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
The club collected HK$800,000 (US$100,000) for the statue, which will be unveiled on Lee's birthday, Sunday, when his friends and family will speak about their memories of the kung fu icon.
During the festival from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, fans will be able to watch free screenings of some of Lee's rarely seen movies and documentaries on Lee, including "The Kid", "Dragon Since 1973" and "A Son is Born".
Tours have been organized for fans to visit Lee's schools, homes and the studios where he made his movies.
