Technology Spyware issues

i had spyware doctor on my laptop until last night, the programme got a virus and stopped it from loading up properly, so i un-installed spyware doctor. the anti-virus took care of the virus.

now with the spyware doctor gone i thought i would need another spyware programme, but my computer already has windows defender which protects against spyware, i must have downloaded spyware doctor as an additional programme just to be on the safer side, since i get the impression it does no harm to have several spyware programmes on the same computer.

with that in mind, would i really need another spyware programme other than the windows defender which it already has

on my computer a few years ago i used to have spybot search and destroy along with a few others (adaware and something else).

i used to interchange between different ones and use them in case some never detected any malicious activity.

whatever you do just make sure your firewalls arent conflicting with one another.

i had AVS (Active Virus Shield (Developed by Kaspersky and AOL)) for WinXP until they stopped their support for it meaning no more updates.

AVG is on my computer but is rubbish and i dislike it because it tries to update far too often and is detrimental to my pc performance.

i am wondering if anyone has any good firewalls, spyware, malware, virus removal tools.

i heard kaspersky are good and norton isnt all its cracked up to be - just a big name brand.

i am wondering if the actual spyware found a virus which corrupted its programme, because when i tried to execute the virus in the usual way it acted like the spyware was trying to remove it and therefore wouldn't let the antivirus delete it or something like that, like trying to delete a mp3 file that is in use by another programme.

i had to shut down my computer and then restart it in safe mode, then do two full scans, one on start up and another in safe mode. i had to un-install the spyware programme so that the anti virus could delete the virus


i tried to go with Norton first off, i even payed for a Norton package and the Keycode wouldn't register the product. Norton customer services were shite at resolving the issue so i cut my losses and went for another package a family member recommended

so yes i agree that Norton are crap money robbing bastards

okay i see what you mean about the virus counteracting the execution. that is certainly a possibility. i think once i tried to delete or quarantine a virus it actually made the infection worse and made the computer go out of control. im sure it was a trojan now that i think of it.

if you cannot delete or get rid of this virus, you may have to resort to doing a clean windows install as a last resort.

just recently my computer running windows xp sp2, began to behave irregularly and i suspected it became infected. so i did a quick scan and removal of spyware. i think its done the trick for the short-term. so just for safety, ive backed up all my music and pictures. i need to back up my software etc to external HDD also.

i hate re-doing the backups of music because i'm always constantly adding info to music files, i.e. sorting them, adding album covers, renaming, adding credits, featuring x, produced by y, artist name, album name, year, genre etc...

so it will take forever, finding which ones i need to also back up to my external HDD - i end up deleting everything off it and re-backing it up.
