OPP Charge Man With First Degree Murder

COLLINGWOOD ON, April 17 /CNW/ - On Sunday April 16, 2006 at 7:30 am,
Ontario Provincial Police and Ambulance were called to an Elm st. residence in
Collingwood. A man from the residence was taken to Collingwood General and
Marine Hospital and later transferred by helicopter to Sunnybrook Health
Sciences Centre in Toronto where Stephen Long of Ottawa, Ontario, was
pronounced dead.
The Ontario Provincial Police have arrested and charged Christopher
Michael Broughton, a 27 year-old Garth street, Hamilton, Ontario, man with
First Degree Murder and Attempt Murder. He has been remanded into custody and
will appear in Collingwood court on April 25 of 2006.
Officers from the Collingwood O.P.P. Crime Unit are continuing the
investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Bernie Murphy of the
O.P.P. Criminal Investigations Branch.

1 of my 3 best friends has been locked up for ten years for murder.. He carjacked a lady and strangled her... I always thought he was innocent up until a few years ago when it finally hit me that he probaly did it.. A Hamilton man with a history of convictions for violent offences faces a first-degree murder charge after a 22-year-old Ottawa man was beaten with a baseball bat at a party in Collingwood early Sunday and died shortly after.

A friend of Mr. Long's was also attacked with a baseball bat and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Mr. Long had driven to Collingwood from Toronto with the friend, whose name has not been released.

In 2003, Mr. Broughton was sentenced to three years in prison for what a judge called a "cowardly" 2002 attack on a woman in London, Ont.

The 23-year-old victim and her 30-year-old female partner had been at gay club the night of the attack and left holding hands. As they waited for food outside at a nearby chip wagon, Mr. Broughton made remarks about "faggots and lesbians" and said the women should perform a sex act on him, court court was told during his trial.

Moments later, he began punching the younger woman, then grabbed her ponytail and pulled her to the ground, where he kicked her in the head.

Mr. Broughton was sentenced to nine more months for possession of a drug for the purpose of trafficking. At the time of the 2003 conviction, he had 14 violent offence convictions under his belt and had already served two years for a 2000 assault.
