For many of us, encountering a long-forgotten smell can bring the memories flooding back.

Soon there could be no need to leave the enjoyment of such pleasant experiences to chance.

Inventors are on the verge of creating the first mobile 'smellophone', a gadget which can capture an odour and then replay it back later, just as camcorders do with images.

Amateur chefs desperate to recreate perfectly a restaurant meal they have enjoyed could use the device to record its aroma.

And there could be more serious uses. Doctors, miles away from an accident, could be sent the smells around a wound to assess if it is infected.

Engineers have already developed a system that can record smells of various fruits, such as apples, oranges, melons and bananas, on to a system of 15 microchips in a handheld device.

Each microchip is an electronic 'nose', containing a chemical sensor which can pick up different traces in the odour.

The Japanese inventors of the system say these sensors can come up with thousands of different combinations.

The proportions of each odour are carefully noted by the microchips and when the 'recording' is played back they recreate them from 96 manmade chemicals.

Up to now, smell generators used in cinemas or shops simply pump out pre-prepared odours.

The invention has been developed by a team at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, led by Pambuk Somboon.

He told the journal New Scientist: 'We can even tell a green apple from a red apple.

'In video you just need to record shades of red, green and blue, but humans have 347 olfactory sensors so we need a lot of source chemicals.'
