If like me you bought a slimline PS2 when it first came out you may need to send your AC adaptor back as it is dangerous.

All adaptors with the date codes - 2004.08 2004.09 2004.10 2004.11 2004.12 or with the code HP-ATO48H03 in the bottom left corner are in question.

If so go to www.ps2ac.com like I am just about to.
