Freak accident kills man on his birthday
Associated Press
A 34-year-old man celebrating his birthday was killed Sunday when he was ejected from the party bus he was riding in and run over by another vehicle, police said.
The 1999 Ford bus was carrying 17 passengers on the Long Beach Freeway about 3:30 a.m. when the right-side door suddenly flew open in the East Los Angeles area, the California Highway Patrol reported. Three passengers were dancing on the bus when the door opened and two of them tumbled out, according to a statement from the Patrol.
Elizabeth Marie Rangel, 30, of Downey, also fell from the bus and survived. She was treated at a hospital for moderate injuries, authorities said, and her condition was not immediately known.
Other passengers helped pull the injured woman to safety after the bus driver stopped on the freeway's shoulder.
The vehicle that hit the man did not stop. CHP officers found a front license plate and other physical evidence at the scene and arrested Albert Deleon, 48, of Los Angeles. He was booked for investigation of hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving, CHP officials said in a statement.
The victim's brother, Lorenzo Devora, told KTTV (Channel 11) that the bus was rented so his brother could celebrate safely and said that Rangel was his brother's girlfriend.
