MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) -- A 21-year-old woman died Saturday after being attacked by a shark off eastern Australia, a rescue helicopter spokeswoman said.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately released, suffered severe injuries when she was mauled by a shark while swimming near North Stradbroke Island, east of the Queensland state capital Brisbane.

After the attack, the woman was airlifted to a local hospital where she had to have both arms amputated just below the elbow, Queensland Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman Helen Anderson said.

"I believe she also had flesh wounds to her leg and torso," she said.

The woman died of her injuries while in hospital, a Queensland state police spokeswoman said on the condition of anonymity following her office's protocol.

The woman had been swimming in shallow water with friends from a local church group when she was grabbed by the shark, Sky News reported. It was not immediately clear what type of shark attacked the woman.

I've seen alot of documentaries about sharks and that they really don't hunt people. They also call shark "attacks" as shark "accidents". They ment that mistakes lead to these attacks, cause we don't know much, we lack knowledge about sharks. It was pretty interesting and they even "tried" their thesis and yea it worked. However, kids don't attempt to play with sharks just cause they did.

I love the sea. I went scuba diving once, it was awesome. You just gotta be careful.

Hey I go to North Stradbroke regularly or used to anyways. Great Islands with the sharks and all, it has been awhile since there's been an attack up here though. They usually occur down south, especially off the coast near where Ruk lives.

RIP to the lady.

peace.

thank god i drown in water past my knees.

ay how far do you have to go into the water..to have a chance of be eating by the sharks?

i went swimming with stingrays a while ago. it was dope. the boat took us 45 minutes out to sea. and tthen they took us to this spot in the middle of the ocean..and the water rightthere was only waist deep. this was out in the cayman island

One way I'd hate to die is to get attacked by an animal, especially a cold blooded one like a shark or a komodo dragon, seeing those big beedy eyes looking at me while it's feeding on me. Fuckin sick.

Damn and here I am about to go to the beach! I have a shark patrol go up and down the front of my house everyday, lets hope one doesnt get through :( Its a lil nerve racking that this woman got taken in SHALLOW water though.. I always thought that was a good place to swim..
