Robber returns to locate dropped gun
Police in Beaufort County, S.C., arrested a robber who dropped his gun at the scene of the crime and returned later to retrieve the weapon.
John Raheem Sweat, 22, allegedly held up a hotel's front desk clerk at gunpoint and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. On his way to his getaway car, he inexplicably dropped his gun without realizing it.
Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Debbie Szpanka said when Sweat discovered his gun was missing, he returned with his accomplice to the hotel's parking lot to retrieve the weapon. Sweat reportedly found the gun, but was trapped in the area because of police activity.
Deputies conducting a search of cars in the area approached Sweat's vehicle and found the gun in plain view on the car floor. Sweat and his accomplice, Colita Janai Murray, were arrested.
Sweat was charged with armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. Murray, 25, received a drug possession charge for cocaine that was found on her during the search; she was released the next day.
Sweat is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on $15,000 bond.
