OpenOffice.org is a free, open source office suite. It is essentially the equivalent of Microsoft Office. It includes;

Writer - a word processor, like Microsoft Word. Contains roughly the same features but also includes the ability to create Portable Document Format (PDF) files from text files.

Calc - a spreadsheet, like Microsoft Excel. Contains roughly the same features but also includes the ability to create Portable Document Format (PDF) files from spreadsheets.

Impress - a presentation program, like Microsoft PowerPoint. Contains roughly the same features but also includes the ability to create Macromedia Flash (SWF) files from presentations.

As well as a number of other programs. As of Version 2.0 (currently only available as an developmental version) OpenOffice.org will also include a database program much like Microsoft Access.

OpenOffice.org works with all standard office suite files (i.e. Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets etc.)

In layman's terms, OpenOffice.org is to Microsoft Office what Firefox is to IE. I recommend it.
