OKCupid FTW

Nice read.

Being Hispanic it bugs me knowing that I get slammed from other races for looking like I speak only spanish. It also bugs me when they find out I don't speak Spanish.

I know quite a few Latinos that don't speak Spanish. I speak Spanish.. but not any formal version of it.. I don't know grammatical rules and such. Plus with the combination of rapid speaking and cut off words.. no one who doesn't speak the same version of Spanish that I do (Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans) will probably know what in the world i'm saying anyway. ME: K lo K, dimelo, como tu ta? (that literally translates into gibberish, hahaha as someone told me after trying google translate).

On the other side of that, I mostly giggle when people see that i'm fairly brown and assume that i'm "African-American" and then are completely confuddled when I start to speak in Spanish to someone. "These n**gers are speaking that Spaynish now? What type of Mexican is this?" I've literally heard from some hillbilly when I was in TN. hahahaha :) But depending on the situation.. it can be fairly annoying. >.< Mostly from professionals.

Anyways.. I loved the responses from the OkCupid staff. I <3 Sarcasm.

Why don't you speak Spanish? You were born in the US, right? But still, come on. It's Cali anyway. White people speak Spanish.

That's what confuses me too. I hear different sets of Spanish all the time that I get confused.
Like when I sell tickets, I guess you say "Bol-et-tos" some say "Bill-et-es" so i get confused as shit. which is why i don't speak it. i feel dumb bc it's supposed to be my culture.

I can say about 6 sentences in spanish. Usually enough to get by in Spain. I use hand gestures. They are universal.

Pretty much. "Some gestures are NOT universal and mean evil shit," which is funny af. either that or it was a joke i heard somewhere.

I dont speak spanish bc of the way I grew up.

My mom was abused by my father, and left him when i was a baby. My older siblings knew spanish bc that's what he mainly spoke. My mom decided to teach me mainly English so i couldn't communicate with him because when i knew some spanish, he told me when i was 4-5yrs old, stuff like "I'm going to stab your father and your mother and I will be re-united" (In spanish).

After that my mom stopped letting me go over

...and most my friends were black growing up in the ghetto so i spoke mainly ebonics / english...and i guess if you don't use it, you lose it? haha

A lot of the time you have to guess and even then sometimes native speakers get it wrong. I've failed before on more than one occasion when talking to someone in Spanish. Especially b/c different people pronounce the words differently like "ll" can sound like a "y" or a "j" depending on where the person is from which can really throw you off.

The spanish in Spain is similar but quite different with somethings.. I remember talking to someone from Spain in Spanish and this guy says to me in Spanish: "puede que me alarga mi bolsa". In Dominican Spanish this guy said to me "Can you elongate my ball bag? (as in his testicles, lol). The word used there for "pass to me" (alargar) is what Dominicans use to say "extend/elongate" and the word he used for bag "bolsa" means testicles in Dominican spanish. I would say the phrase as "puede que me pasa mi funda".

Anyways.. that happened and I yelled at him for no reason as I now know. So.. If I ever visit Spain.. I won't be speaking in Spanish hahahaha, except for the basics.
