He was at demigod-like level when he was elected, with a huge popular mandate, and rose to prominence on the force of his own charisma. that's not the notion. the notion is that his hands are tied because of a bipartisan congress and because republicans are filibustering his bills. if all he needed was a simple majority to get his policies pushed through, he'd probably be killing it. They're willing to send this country down the shitter just so Obama doesn't get re-elected.

Well, I was specifically responding to EDub's thought that Obama's hands were "tied by his supporters and backers."

I agree that the GOP has taken obstructionism to unseemly levels but Don't Ask Don't Tell repealed despite John McCain's filibusters. DREAM Act provisions are now in effect via executive order. Obama bypassed Congress completely when we went to war in Libya.

George Washington created executive privilege to get Congress off his nuts re: the Jay Treaty and ever since then presidents have all grabbed a little more power for themselves to do what they want. The merits of doing so are debatable and I'm sure former constitutional law professor Obama thought quite a bit about them when he declined to uniltaterally raise the debt ceiling and decided to compromise with the GOP, and he thought about them quite a bit when he decided to give himself the authority to order the execution of American citizens without due process and while refusing to explain himself.
