Technology need help !!!

seems i got a problem i've never had before.
whem my windows xp are starting a window pops up and says that my local profile cannot be found so temporary profile will start. all changes i do only last till i restart my computer, then starts everything again. problem is that windows are starting hella slow, all my folders from desktop are gone, so are my favorites from firefox. everything seems like computer started the very first time after installation.
also was said that it could happen due to my antivirus program being out of date. don't know, this started when i tried a new word document, my pc freezed, i restarted..and the rest u know.
so the question: can i restore my lost local profile (i tried system restore - didn't help) if not, will reinstallation of windows solve it?
any help would be appreciated.

re-installation of windows will solve everything. but can you back everything up that you need and are you sure you can reconfigure everything properly? if you have re-installed it before then i would say go ahead. i have never heard of the problem you're having. the Anti Virus has nothing to do with it.

yes, it is! i'll read more about it, maybe i could fix without reinstallation.
Could this happen because of that when my pc freezed i just simply pushed power button and shut it down, then started again (without any restarting)?

problem is that to transfer my old user documents and settings i need them, but that folder is empty. i can see it's not when i do a search though.

seems i'm in a deeper shit than i've thought. reinstalled windows, now i cannot activate it, somehow it shows that my product key is incorrect, which is all good for sure. computer works incredebely slow (512ram) it looks like 64 ram... maybe because of service pack1 at the moment? especially slow when i try to move any windows...
those lost files i found in the old profile's folder, and transfer them manually.
seems like format c: would cut this bullshit.
