Mom sent to prison for deadly abuse of 3-year-old girl
A woman who fatally abused her 3-year-old daughter, brutally twisting the young girl's face with pliers and repeatedly beating her until she died, was Tuesday ordered to spend seven years in prison.
In handing down the Tokyo District Court ruling on the 31-year-old woman, Rena Taiko, 31, Presiding Judge Keisuke Hosoda said Taiko deserved harsh criticism for her actions.
"From about 20 days before the incident, she slapped (her daughter) in the face until it swelled up, and twisted her lips with pliers. She ignored her as a human and continued to treat her cruelly, and she deserves harsh criticism," Hosoda said.
Prosecutors had demanded a 10-year prison sentence.
The ruling acknowledged that Taiko conspired with a 31-year-old friend to carry out the abuse. The friend, who is facing the same allegations of injury resulting in death in a separate trial, has denied the charges against her.
Taiko was convicted of conspiring to beat her 3-year-old daughter Arisu at the friend's home in Tokyo's Nerima-ku between the evening of Nov. 24 last year and the predawn hours of the following morning. The 3-year-old was repeatedly hit in the face, and she died from brain injuries on Dec. 13, according to the ruling. (Mainichi)
