TORNADO HITS BIRMINGHAM

Several people were injured when a mini-tornado ripped through parts of Birmingham.

Trees were uprooted and extensive damage was caused to some buildings.

West Midlands Police confirmed that an emergency triage centre had been set up in the Moseley area of the city.

The High Street in neighbouring Kings Heath had also been closed.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the nearby Ladypool Road area after a number of trees were blown down and roofs were reportedly lifted off buildings.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "I can confirm we have been called out to the High Street in Kings Heath to a number of incidents.

"I have had a report back from the scene that approximately 300 metres of the shopping centre in the High Street has been severely damaged by adverse weather conditions.

"We are looking at multiple casualties - the number is not known as yet but paramedics and police are in attendance at the scene."

wow, we had a tornado drop down in the middle of the city a couple weeks ago, big woop. We also had a mini title wave that came from a beaver dam braking, at my cottage, ripped up the road, took 3 cars in to Lake Winnipeg, trashed like 5 cottages, luckily, it was at 8 in the mornin, and no one was on the beach, and only one of the cottages had people in it. No one was hurt, but if it had been at like 4 in the afternoon, well that wudda been a different story, ther wudda been definate injuries and mabe sum deaths

A massive clean-up operation is under way in Birmingham after a terrifying mini-tornado devastated hundreds of homes.

Some 20 people were injured when the freak twister - which reached speeds of up to 130mph - ripped through the city's south.

Fire brigade leaders say the storm "badly affected" 300 homes in 30 streets - stripping houses of their roofs, uprooting hundreds of trees and knocking down walls.

West Midlands Fire Service said it received 240 calls in the first hour following the tornado. More than 25 fire engines carrying 100 firefighters were deployed.

Residents forced to leave their homes spent the night in two sports centres.

Witnesses saw the winds lift cars and turn street signs and masonry into missiles when the tornado hit the city at about 2.45pm on Thursday.

The Sparkbrook, Balsall Heath, Moseley and Kings Heath areas were worst hit.

West Midlands Ambulance Service treated 20 patients, including three with serious injuries.

Carpenter Brian Cassidy, 30, jumped into his friend's car and watched as the tornado passed over.

"It hit a roof and just lifted it off," he said.

"It was definitely a twisting motion. I could see grown men on a garage forecourt crying, holding their ears."

Student Leyla Turkoglu, 18, said: "People were running inside to get out of it.

"Then we saw roof tiles flying around and then trees landing on the road. It was just really bad and odd.

"The sky went a really odd colour, browny not grey. It was like night-time and then it was over as soon as it started."

Another witness said: "You see something like this and you realise why they call it the finger of God. I just can't believe it."
